Spanish postal services move into the internet era

The Spanish postal service (Correos) has recently opened up 4000 new ‘free access’ points to its virtual offices, with over 30000 terminals spread across Spain. Developed in co-operation with the state agency Red.es, this initiative is intended to further promote the information society in Spain. The new postal service network, called ‘Telecentros’, will make it possible for more than 5 million citizens to access on-line postal services. The project is part of the postal services ‘Accessibility Plan’ which is being implemented progressively by Correos.

Cash lifeline for Guernsey sub-post offices

Guernsey Post’s dividend could be used to subsidise its rural retail outlets.
The utility paid GBP391,000 plus 20% tax to its shareholder, the States, for the year ending September 2005, according to figures released this week.
Postwatch Guernsey chairman David Inglis said that money could be used to maintain postal services that are threatened by its need to cut costs.
‘It seems strange that the States have taken about GBP600,000 from Guernsey Post in dividend and tax and we would like to see that come back to the taxpayer in the form of support to the retail network,’ he said.

Association believes Deutsche Post can reduce postage for parcels

The German association for postal services and telecommunications (DVPT) estimates that Deutsche Post, the German national postal services provider, could reduce its parcel prices for private customers by at least 5 per cent. The association called for a consumer-friendly product combining the advantages of parcel postage with the lower prices offered for small packages. It currently costs at least 7 euros to send a parcel within Germany. A small package, on the other hand, costs just 4.30 euros, but is uninsured and cannot be tracked.

BNS – Baltic Logistic System-Latvija (BLS), an express delivery company selling services under Bizpak trademark, last year boosted its revenues by 87 percent to 1.43 million lats (EUR 2.03 mln), but ended the year in the red, the company said. BLS board chairperson Julija Moreva declined to reveal exact loss figure for 2005, but said that the loss was due to large investments in the company. Moreva said that the number of express deliveries reached 671,000 last year, which is 1.75 times more than in 2004. Moreva said that last year had been good for the company and the positive results were thanks to Latvia’s accession to the European Union (EU), change in people’s attitude to outsourcing services, growth of the market in general, good company team work and the services which met business demands.
