TNT still seen as takeover target

TNT remains a potential takeover target despite its status as the top European express business and the second-biggest logistics provider in the world. However, the former Dutch mail monopoly is restructuring operations to focus on its TNT Mail and TNT Express units. The company has also sold its contract-delivery business TNT Logistics in order to strengthen its defense against any takeover. Chief executive Peter Bakker is planning to use part of the proceeds for a share buyback in the second half and for small acquisitions to boost TNT’s presence in Europe and Asia.

France's La Poste chooses Pitney Bowes to provide third party mailing solutions

Pitney Bowes Inc announced today that its French subsidiary, Secap Groupe Pitney Bowes, a company that specializes in supplying mailstream equipment and solutions, has secured a major national deal with La Poste to provide Third Party Mailing Solutions (TPMS). Secap Groupe Pitney Bowes will provide La Poste with 250 networked mailing machines from its DM series, a solution designed to help enterprises optimize management of their high-volume mail. The new systems will help La Poste in its move to provide expanded business services to its customers. The value of the transaction is approximately euro 5.0 million (USD6.0 million)

Slovenia Post Chairman calls for two-phase privatisation

The chairman of Slovenia’s state-run postal service has said that the company should be privatised in two steps, with a strategic owner allowed to buy 49% of the company within seven years. “If our proposal is approved by the government, a strategic partner will be allowed to buy 24% of the Post within two years, with the option to increase the stake to 49% after five years,” Ales Hauc told the daily Dnevnik on Monday, 27 February. According to Hauc, the Post of Slovenia has held talks with Swiss, Austrian, Belgian, French and German postal services on a possible partnership. He also said that the company was looking to make an acquisition of its own as part of the privatisation process. The Post has been in negotiations with the Macedonian postal service on cooperation and a possible takeover, Hauc told Dnevnik.

German express carrier GO! grows 20% in 2005

German express carrier GO! General Overnight Service increased its revenues by 20 per cent to €200 million last year and raised volumes to over two million parcels. The group is again targeting double-digit growth in 2006 and planning a stronger international presence.

GO! managing director Ralf-Hans Dierks said the double-digit growth had been generated thanks to the organisation’s focus on quality and growth. “GO! has grown organically, focuses clearly on high quality standards and is well positioned regionally, nationally and internationally,” he commented. “We are again targeting a clear increase in consignment volumes this year, and I’m sure we will achieve this.”
