Online spending hits new peak

Growth in online shopping surpassed expectations last year. Most of the key annual indicators are now in, and show a consistent pattern. Verdict Research says the UK value was up 28.9 per cent to £8.2 billion, and growth was 19 times as much as in overall retail spending. Interactive Media in Retail Group says Christmas spending was up 50 per cent to £5 billion – a finding echoed by Royal Mail’s increase of 44 per cent in items handled (to 77 million). IMRG’s figure for the whole of 2005 is £19.6bn (calculated on a different basis from Verdict’s). In the US, JupiterResearch says online spending reached $81 billion last year, and will rise 17 per cent to $95 billion this year, increasing to $144 billion by 2010.

Swiss Post to bundle logistic services

Swiss Post intends to unite all its logistic services, including package, express and courier deliveries, into one unit called PostLogistics AG, Swiss Post said on February 21, 2006. The move is part of the company’s attempt to harmonise its market presence and will affect a total 5,500 people, who will be employed by PostLogistics as of January 1, 2007. With an average annual turnover of 1.2 bln Swiss francs (USD917 mln/770 mln euro) PostLogistics will be the largest logistics company in Switzerland. Belgian La Poste/De Post to close 45 post offices by June 2006

Belgian postal service company an La Poste/De Post will close 45 post offices before June 2006, local news site 7 sur 7 reported on February 21, 2006. Of the total, 23 will be immediately replaced by a PostPunten sales counter, three will be replaced by a brand new post office and another 19 will be excluded from the sales network for being obsolete or for security reasons. The new management contract of La Poste provides for the closure of over 100 post offices in 2006.

Thousands of UK post offices `won't be closed'

Royal Mail denied today that it had any plans to close thousands of post offices but admitted it faced a “challenging” future. Chief executive Adam Crozier repeated to MPs earlier this month that just 4,000 offices would be needed to run a basic postal service. There are 14,500 post offices across the UK, but officials made it clear today this did not mean that 10,000 would close.
“We have absolutely no plans to close 10,000 post offices, although the outlook for the network remains challenging,” said a spokesman. “The future of the network depends to a large extent on Government decisions. There have always been more post offices than is required for a mail service. That is because they have offered a range of other services in the past, most of which have been from Government.”
