ANC bosses in pounds 37.3m buyout

Parcel group ANC has delivered a pounds 37.3 million buyout of the company. The management team has bought a 50 per cent stake previously held by institutional shareholders. The deal, backed by private equity firm Lloyds TSB Development Capital, sees the management’s equity increase to 73.75 per cent with LDC taking 26.25 per cent. Led by chief executive Mark Gittins, the six-strong team took over in 2001 and have overseen significant growth in both revenue and profits. Formed in 1982, ANC Group employs 58 people at its Birmingham depot and 5,000 in total. Mr Gittins said: “This deal confirms ANC Group’s position as the fastest-growing independent player in the UK. The express parcel sector is very competitive and ANC Group have not only held their unit cost base, but new investment has given us the capacity to handle a further 35 million parcels a year with our existing infrastructure. Our record in recent years of winning market share will continue.”

Legal threat to UK mail staff over strike

Royal Mail today threatened legal action against union officials representing postal workers on wildcat strike in Northern Ireland. The company said it did not think they had shown any real will to try to get the unofficial action in Belfast called off. It has written to a number of Communication Workers` Union representatives warning it could take action against them to recover financial losses caused to the firm by four days of unofficial action which has halted postal deliveries to much of Belfast. David Peden, Royal Mail commercial manager, said: “We have written to some individual union officials advising them they we may consider legal action. “Let`s be clear – there has been four days of unofficial action. We feel that there is no real evidence from union representatives to demonstrate any real will to get people back to work and are taking action accordingly.”

UK mailing issues: Go with the flow (transactional mail)

Mailing houses have formed a radical post-deregulation idea: produce and deliver direct and transactional mail under one roof, creating a single mail stream. If they can pull this off, the scope for marketing via bills and statements will be huge. It is only one month since the UK postal services market opened up fully to competition, so it is a little early to predict the eventual impact of liberalisation on the direct marketing industry. But one thing is certain: life will never be the same again for mailing houses. So long as there was a monopoly service provider, these suppliers were limited in how much value they could add to their services. Postage discounts can only be taken so far when the range of delivery options is restricted. In an open market, however, new opportunities have arisen. Many of these will flow upstream from the decisions taken by the new postal operators. In developing services and building market share, companies like DHL Global Mail, TNT Mail and UK Mail will need supplier partners to feed their distribution networks.
Already, the business development strategy of these operators could point to one major change. The new players have been targeting high- volume, regular transactional mailers – in other words, issuers of bills and statements. If their new clients also decide to move their direct mail activity away from Royal Mail, it is a bonus.
