UK Royal Mail managers to help clear Christmas postbag

Thousands of Royal Mail managers have been asked to work in sorting and delivery offices or even drive postal vans in the busy run-up to Christmas in a bid to cut costs, it was revealed today. The organisation said it wanted managers to spend 10 days or more helping clear the expected huge festive postbag so it could cut back on the number of casual staff it employed. Senior officials worked in sorting and delivery offices last year and the practice will be encouraged again in the coming months. “This is about making Christmas a success for our customers,” said a Royal Mail spokesman. “Our managers have always been very willing to volunteer.”

Hungary’s express air delivery market to double in under five years

Hungary’s market for international express air deliveries is expected to be worth about EUR 70m this year, up from EUR 62m in 2004, according to a study by Deutsche Post, which owns express delivery service DHL Express Magyarorszag. The study estimates the market for international express air deliveries will grow further to EUR 100m in 2008, and to EUR 150m in 2010, more than doubling in size over five years. According to the study, DHL Express Magyarorszag is leader on the international express air delivery market, with a 36pc share, followed by TNT Express Worldwide Hungary with 31pc, the Hungarian unit of UPS with 23pc, FedEx, which has no Hungarian unit, with 9pc, and the Hungarian post Magyar Posta with 2pc.

Belgian De Post/La Poste, eBay Belgium sign agreement

Belgian postal services company De Post/La Poste and eBay Belgium, a unit of the U.S. online auction house eBay, have signed a cooperation agreement for easy sending of parcels, it was reported on October 21, 2005.

Under the agreement, henceforward the eBay users will be able to send more easily parcels through De Post/La Poste. eBay Belgium, which has more than one million registered users, will launch a send centre on its website, providing information about the parcel services of De Post/La Poste.

Spanish Correos to spend 252 mln Euro on improvements 2006

Spanish state-run postal services provider Sociedad Estatal Correos y Telegrafos SA (Correos) plans to spend 252 mln euro (USD300.8 mln) on the construction and renovation of post offices and on the automation and modernisation of its postal services in 2006. Investments in the construction of new post offices or in the renovation of the existing ones will stand at 135.7 mln euro (USD161.9 mln). Over 43 mln euro (USD51.3 mln) will be spent on implementing new technologies. Correos will also earmark 32 mln euro (USD38.2 mln) for buying office furniture, security equipment and new delivery vans.
Almost half of the financing will be allocated for the regions of Valencia, Madrid, Andalusia, Catalonia and the Basque region.

Deutsche Post management confirms full-year 05 Group guidance

In the context of the Offering Document, which is now being posted to Exel shareholders, the Board of Deutsche Post confirms the forecast that current year operating profit (EBIT) will be at least Euro 3.6 billion. Correspondingly, the Board of Deutsche Post forecasts that the consolidated net profits will exceed those of the previous year by at least Euro 500 million.
The profit forecast for the full year 2005 is based on the interim financial results for the six months ended 30 June 2005, the management accounts for the two months ended 31 August 2005 and the Board of Deutsche Post’s forecast of results for the six months ending 31 December 2005.
