TNT Mail UK wins Lloyds TSB business

TNT Mail UK has secured a contract with Lloyds TSB to handle over 100 million items of its mail. The deal will be one of the largest contracts awarded by a national mailer to a new entrant in the newly deregulated postal market. Lloyds TSB joins other TNT Mail UK clients such as Sky, Caudwell Communications, Express Gifts, Booker and others operating under TNT Mail UK’s access agreement with Royal Mail. This is a significant deal for TNT Mail UK and takes its expected volume for 2005 to over 500 million items with hopes to exceed this volume as new clients come on stream.

Postmen praised for delivering record Royal Mail profit and the best customer service in a decade

Royal Mail today announced a record GBP537 million profit on its operations for 2004-05 with quality of service to customers now hitting the highest levels in a decade. Royal Mail’s Chairman, Allan Leighton, said: “Postmen and women have achieved a fantastic turnaround. “They will now deservedly get a Share in Success payment of GBP1,074 amounting to GBP218 million of the company’s profit. It’s one of the biggest profit shares with employees in UK corporate history.” Mr Leighton said other highlights included First and Second Class mail, along with all Mailsort and Presstream bulk mail services and Standard Parcels, hitting or exceeding their target levels since last July. Since October the results for First Class mail and Mailsort and Presstream bulk mail are the best in a decade, latest figures show the number of letters lost has almost halved, and 99.92% of the mail arrives safely. There has been a 144% increase in the profit on operations for the financial year to March 2005 with the GBP537 million result comparing to a GBP220 million profit the previous year.

UK Mail posts small profit

Royal Mail is losing 250m letters a year to its new upstart competitor UK Mail.
Business Post, the courier company that launched UK Mail 12 months ago to deliver post and packages for utilities and banks to their customers, said today that the fledgling business is ahead of targets and is already turning a small profit. Business Post founder and chairman Peter Kane said UK Mail had turned over GBP10m in its first trading year to 31 March, and had grasped 1% of the corporate postal market. ‘We are encouraged by the prospects for UK Mail which remains on track for 3% market share by the end of its third year,’ said Kane.

Business Post announces preliminary results for the year ended 31 March 2005

Business Post announces that, in the year ended 31 March 2005, it continued to enjoy considerable success. Financial highlights include turnover increased by 21% to GBP233.3m, representing like-for-like growth of 12%, operating profit increased by 9% to GBP20.8m, and pre-tax profit by 7% to GBP20.5m. Commercial highlights include express increased its turnover by 7%, representing an increased market share of around 8% and all of the other existing businesses – International, HomeServe, Courier and UK Pallets – increased turnover by at least 15%. UK Mail, which commenced trading on 10 May 2004, had an outstanding and profitable first year. The annualised year-end volume of approximately 250m items represented a market share of approaching 1%, ahead of expectations.

France’s La Poste aims to launch expanded retail banking ops in Jan 2006

France’s state-owned postal operator La Poste aims to launch an extended range of retail banking products from January 2006, following the government’s approval of a law that allows La Poste to fully compete with the country’s other retail banks. ‘The launch date we are counting on today is Jan 1, 2006,’ said Patrick Werner, assistant managing director and head of financial services at La Poste, at a press conference. Last week, Parliament adopted a law that allows La Poste to begin offering home and consumer credit loans alongside its current and savings account operations.
