DHL buy of KarstadtQuelle logistics ops probed by cartel office

Germany’s cartel office said it has started a full investigation into Deutsche Post World Net AG unit DHL’s acquisition of KarstadtQuelle AG’s logistics operations. A cartel office spokeswoman the office has completed its four-week pre-examination of the deal and decided to launch a more lengthy investigation, which is expected to be completed by early July. KarstadtQuelle sold the logistics business of its department stores division to DHL for more than 200 mln eur.

DHL Logistics EBITA up 36.4 pct Y/Y 2004

Logistics services provider DHL Logistics, a subsidiary of German postal services provider Deutsche Post AG, and its units Danzas Air & Ocean and DHL Solutions saw a 36.4 pct year-on-year rise in earnings before interest, tax and amortisation (EBITA) to 281 mln euro (USD363.1 mln) in 2004, Deutsche Post said on April 13, 2005. DHL Logistics increased its sales revenue by 15.4 pct to some 6.8 bln euro (USD8.788 bln). Return on sales (ROS) rose to 4.1 pct from 3.5 pct. DHL Logistics’ results show that it has successfully advanced its growth course and succeeded in convincing many new customers of its global capacity in a highly competitive market, Logistics and Corporate Service board member, Frank Appel, said.

French postal reform bill returns to Lower House

The French lower house, the national assembly, will today begin a second reading of the bill which aims to reform France’s postal services. The proposed legislation, which was debated by the French senate in January, seeks to open up the French postal sector to competition. While many of its provisions have already been approved by both houses, the national assembly’s economic affairs commission has tabled an amendment which would limit the powers of Arcep, the body which is to be set up to regulate the liberalized postal and electronic communications sector. If the amendment is passed, Arcep will be able to protect competition in the sector but will not have power over all of the operations of the French post office, La Poste.

DHL invests 100 million euros in Bremen

DHL is investing around 100 million euros in the logistical infrastructure at its Bremen location. In the course of these activities, about 400 new jobs will be created. The express and logistics provider, part of Deutsche Post World Net, is building a new parcel center and a new high rack warehouse. At the same time, existing logistics centers in Bremen will be extensively modernized. This was announced today at a press conference given by Dr. Peter Kruse, member of the Board of Management of Deutsche Post World Net responsible for the express business in Germany and Europe, together with Dr. Peter Gloystein, Mayor of Bremen and Senator for Finance and Ports. As Kruse explained: “Bremen will become one of the most modern locations within the DHL network. Our customers will benefit from further improvements in service quality.”
