German Deutsche Post to strengthen logistics division

Deutsche Post AG is looking for acquisitions in the Asian and American region in line with the strategy to strengthen its logistics business, Frank Appel, member of the management board, said on April 12, 2005.
Deutsche Post’s DHL Danzas Air & Ocean unit in the Asia-Pacific region and German logistics company DHL Solutions are the two subsidies to profit the most from the expansion strategy. Deutsche Post aims to be market leader in air and marine cargo freight as well as to be among the top 3 in contract logistics.
The group’s logistics business reported a 15.4 pct year-on-year increase in sales to 6.8 bln euro (USD8.79 bln) in 2004. Danzas generated some 4.9 bln euro (USD6.33 bln) of them while DHL Solutions sales accounted for 1.8 bln euro (USD2.33 bln). The earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) rose to 281 mln euro (USD363.1 mln), compared to 206 mln euro (USD266.2 mln) in 2003.

CTT Portugal signs deal with Iberdrola

Iberdrola SA said it is targeting to reach a 15-20 pct share of the Portuguese electricity market in five years after signing a marketing deal with the country’s Grupo CTT Correios de Portugal today. In a statement, Iberdrola said the chairman of its Portuguese operations Joquim Pina Moura, signed a collaboration agreement with CTT’s Carlos Horta e Costa today in Lisbon to market electricity through the Portuguese communications company’s 3,500 offices in the country.

Higher noon for SystemPlus

SystemPlus, the German-based road haulage alliance, has launched a new time-definite service with guaranteed delivery times in key European markets.
Since the start of April, the group has offered a noon delivery service in Denmark, Belgium, Luxemburg, France, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic. Other countries are in the pipeline. In Germany, noon and 10am services have been standard for several years.

Manifesto pledge to hold on to UK Royal Mail set to please Labour loyalists and unions

The Royal Mail is to remain in government hands, Labour’s election manifesto will pledge next week in a promise that is likely to be welcomed by party loyalists and trades unions. Tony Blair has decided that, while competition to open up the postal market should continue as the government brings more private involvement into the running of public services, the Royal Mail itself should remain in state ownership. The manifesto pledge effectively rules out a partial sell-off of the business, one option that is thought to interest Allan Leighton, its chairman. There has been persistent speculation that the government might approve a part-privatisation after the general election. However, ministers are in agreement with trades unions, which have argued fiercely against it.
