GLS increases its shareholding in General Logistics Systems Poland

General Logistics Systems Poland Sp. (GLS Poland) becomes a wholly owned subsidiary: “With effect from January 1st 2005, GLS adds the remaining 74.9 percent of GLS Poland to its existing holding of 25.1 percent”, explains Rico Back, Chief Executive Officer of General Logistics Systems B.V., Amsterdam (GLS). “GLS is planning to conclude a system-partner contract with the previous majority shareholder, the Raben Group, which will maintain and intensify the close and trusting cooperation.” The new Managing Director of GLS Poland will be Klaus Conrad, who, in addition, is also Managing Director of GLS Germany and is responsible for GLS’ activities in Central Europe.

Polish Post gets ready for commercialisation

The Poczta Polska state-controlled postal service is entering a period of huge changes. The Post has already applied to the Ministry of Infrastructure for a decision on transforming the enterprise into a commercial company. This, according to Tadeusz Bartkowiak, the Post’s general director, should happen as soon as possible. “The Post should be listed on the bourse no later than a year following commercialisation,” says Bartkowiak.

Spain – Correos tenders comms contract

Correos, Spain’s postal operator, has tendered a EUR 109.74 million, five-year contract for the operation of its voice and Internet services, reports Cinco Dias. The contract would also include mobile and fixed-line services. Of the contracts value, fixed-line services will account for the most, with EUR 100.3 million.

EC hints that it can deliver for An Post

The European Commission has given a big hint it would approve any special State aid requested by the Government to support loss-making An Post. The signal from Brussels does not follow any request from the Government, but comes in response to a question from an Opposition MEP. The Commission’s positive reaction will strengthen union demands for greater Government support for the loss-making postal service. Fine Gael’s Gay Mitchell was told by the Competition Commissioner, Neelie Kroes, that she would be sympathetic to any request from Ireland for assistance to help offset the cost of a full national delivery service.

Price change count down begins

On the 29 March the Royal Mail published its Pricing in Proportion
proposals. Just 7 days later, the Regulator, Postcomm, has published its
‘minded to accept’ consultation document. It is clear that Royal Mail and Postcomm are working closely together to ensure Pricing in Proportion is introduced in April 2006. Peter Carr, Chairman of Postwatch, commenting on the Regulator’s announcement said: ” There can be no doubt that the count down has started. In April next year the price for mailing an item will no longer be
determined by just its weight. The price will be determined by weight, size,
and thickness.”
