La Poste to create new level within heirarchy

La Poste, the French postal services operator, is planning to create a new level within the heirarchy of its public network. At present the groups network includes five levels: the head office, eight lower authorities, 102 departmental offices, 270 local groups and around 12,000 individual establishments. As of 1 January 2005 a regional level could be added between the eight authorities below the head office and the 102 departmental offices. This would lead to the creation of 24 or 25 regional offices.

216 SDS staff express interest in redundancy deal

An Post has extended the deadline for expressions of interest in a severance or retirement package being offered to staff at its SDS parcels division, which it is planning to close. Last night, the company confirmed that 216 SDS staff had already expressed an interest in taking an offer of severance or early retirement. The company wants to transfer 180 SDS workers into the An Post business and shed the remaining 270 jobs at the parcels division. The parcels division will then be reintegrated into the parent company in January.

UK Postwatch advises customers to use 2nd class stamps at Christmas

Postwatch, the consumer watchdog for postal services, has reviewed Royal Mail’s performance over the past two Christmases. We found that whilst 2nd class performance dipped slightly, 1st class performance declined dramatically, to the point that more than three in every ten letters posted 1st class failed to be delivered the following working day. Postwatch recommends customers use 2nd class stamps at Christmas.

An Post seeks legal advice over communication union’s ‘sabotage’ letter

Directors and management at An Post are consulting libel lawyers following a strongly worded letter from the Communications Workers Union (CWU) to bossesat the troubled semi-State. After the workforce at SDS, An Post’s courier subsidiary, had picketed Thursday’s board meeting which confirmed an earlier decision to close it down, recriminations are beginning to fly between both sides in the continuing industrial relations warfare. Sources at An Post insist that the letter from the union accused managers of “an act of sabotage”, of “misrepresenting the financial position of SDS” and told the directors that they had been “coerced by misinformation”.

DHL France completes first phase of restructuring programme

DHL France, the subsidiary of DHL the transport and logistics division of German Postal Services operator Deutsche Post, has completed the first phase of its restructuring programme. As of 1 January 2005 the company will consist of only four legal structures, compared with 13 previously. These will include a holding company with the name DHL and three subsidiaries, DHL Solutions, DHL Express France and DHL Danzas Air & Ocean. The changes are to be introduced with retroactive effect from 1 January 2004.
