Consignia, formerly the Post Office, plans to announce thousands more redundancies this year.
They will come on top of the 30,000 job losses already planned.
Sources close to Consignia, which is losing £1.5 million a day, believe that at least another 5,000 jobs will go as the company battles for survival. The job cuts will come from reorganised urban post offices and the parcels business.
John Whittingdale, shadow Trade and Industry Secretary, will this week wade into the dispute over Consignia, by claiming the postal monopoly should be split in two.
The Conservative MP will use a keynote speech at a London conference of mail industry executives to launch a twin attack on both Consignia’s management and the Government.
