Business customers back end to mail monopoly

Consignia’s biggest cus-tomers have backed plans to end the Royal Mail group’s monopoly in an attempt to prevent any watering down of proposed regulation to introduce competition. The Mail Users’ Association, representing business customers, had avoided endorsing the regulator’s plans, fearing they could harm mail deliveries by pushing Consignia further into financial crisis. However, the group has now ended its neutrality and de-cided there is a bigger risk to service levels if Consignia were allowed to continue without competition.

Although the structure of the post office will only undergo cosmetic structural changes in the near future, some fundamental shifts in the ways it does business are already being discussed, including bringing in private companies to deliver international mail and cashing in on its slowly developing digital communications network.

What should we make of Allan Leighton, interim chairman of Consignia, letting it be known that he opposed the (10% executive)increase? At first glance this appears reassuring, but on further reflection it is down right worrying. If this was a regular, publicly-listed company, such a rift between chairman and chief executive would have had the financial community laughing in the streets.
