Delivered on time: the first real competition for the Post Office

The profitable – or otherwise – monopoly of the Post Office is about to be challenged by the Birmingham-based Business Post. “Mail is profitable. Don’t believe this ‘it costs 28p to deliver a 27p letter’ talk. The mail itself is profitable — it is all the overheads which the Post Office carries that drag it down.” So says Paul Carvell, chief executive of Business Post. Business Post believes it can undercut prices and provide time-sensitive services.

DPWN Share Offer Possible in 2002

Germany’s finance ministry has not ruled out a further offering of shares in postal operator Deutsche Post AG in 2002, according to a reply given on Tuesday to a parliamentary written question. ‘Further steps to privatise Deutsche Post AG will be taken in the context of the 1994 post reform when conditions on capital markets allow,’ the finance ministry wrote in response to a question from the opposition about whether a further placing in 2002 was possible.

Deutsche Post hangs on to tax breaks

The German government yesterday reiterated that it was justified in exempting Deutsche Post, the postal group, from raising sales taxes on certain core services. Deutsche Post’s tax payments have become a major source of irritation for investors since Germany’s federal audit office in January reproached the government for granting Deutsche Post an unfair competitive advantage by exempting it from sales tax.

Rival plans own post box

Rival post boxes to Royal Mail could be set up in supermarkets, garages and high street shops under plans by Business Post, the Birmingham mail group.
Business Post is in talks with potential partners to establish a high-street presence to compete with Royal Mail, and also wants to put its own collection boxes in post offices. A machine with Business Post stamps may be attached to the post box, or stamps could be bought from retailers hosting the new post boxes.

Hungarian Post Office to manage internet public procurement system for 10 years

The Hungarian Post Office has been granted concession rights to carry out public procurement on the internet for 10 years. The electronic public procurement system will operate as a market place. The system was introduced to the public by Istvan Stumpf, minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, and Istvan Kalmar, director-general of the Hungarian Post Office.
