Consignia to cut 30,000 jobs in drive for mail efficiency

Consignia is to reveal detailed plans within three weeks to shed up to 30,000 jobs. The redundancy programme will lead to one of the biggest culls of middle management in British corporate history. Up to 10,000 “suits” are expected to lose their jobs as part of the shake-up. The board believes that huge savings can be achieved by stripping away layers of “inefficient” middle management.

Northgate looks to expansion in Europe

Northgate is looking at expanding its rapidly growing commercial vehicle hire operations into Europe, where it has already identified acquisition targets.

AN POST FACES TOUGH CHALLENGES AS FURTHER LIBERALISATION TAKES PLACE

Changes proposed in 2001 which would have brought the weight limit on reserved services directly from 350g to 50g were too much too soon for An Post. The revised two-step agreement is “acceptable”, according to An post spokesman Mr John Foley. An Post expects one-third of revenues from its letter division will be exposed to competition next year and 40 per cent from 2006. This is still a much larger slice of the industry than in other European countries, because a higher proportion of mail in the Republic is destined to go abroad.
