DEUTSCHE POST, the German post office, is in talks to scoop a major delivery contract from under the nose of Consignia, the company that runs the Royal Mail.
Officials from the German group are working to seal a long-term contract with the Periodical Publishers Association (PPA) to deliver up to 700 million magazines a year on behalf of the magazine trade body’s members.
The contract is equivalent to about 4 per cent of Consignia’s business.

FKI Logistex, a global leader in automated material handling solutions and part
of FKI plc, announces that its FKI Logistex Crisplant operation has won a
contract from Austrian Post (Osterreichische Post AG) for a distribution and
sorting system valued at 13.45 million euros (#8.4 million). The system will be
installed in a new mail distribution centre (“Briefzentrum Ost”) in Vienna. The
scheduled handover date is August 2002.
Small local couriers come into their own for immediate deliveries within few blocks or miles I hey are (or should be) appreciably cheaper than the premium same-day services of the big express operators. Also, the locals should be faster, since they kiiow the area and can collect and deliver in one sweep rather than scheduling your consignment among a round of consolidated activities.
