Geodis-Sernam: SNCF arbitrates in complex alliance

French transport minister Jean-Claude Gayssot wants to see a vast logistics branch in France, but this seems a long way off. The acquisition by Geodis of a 15 per cent stake in parcels delivery group Sernam, a subsidiary of railway group SNCF, is still being negotiated and is a small step towards the creation of such a branch.

Mail checks will show true losses and delays

According to the Daily Telegraph (U.K.), “independent
auditors have been appointed to supervise surveys of late postal deliveries
and losses of mail. Quarterly performance figures produced by Consignia, the
company that owns the Post Office, Royal Mail and Parcelforce, will no
longer be based simply on the number of first-class items delivered the next
day but on the delivery of all mail. Deloitte & Touche, the London-based
chartered accountants, have been given a three-year contract to monitor the
surveys after complaints from Postwatch, the industry’s watchdog, that
existing research is too limited and not independent. Mail losses are known
to run into millions of letters and cards each week.”

Brussels protests over proposed aid to Swissair

Brussels protested on Tuesday about the proposed recapitalisation of Swissair but admitted it was unable to stop the operation from going through.

The move came as the regional airline Crossair started the process of transforming itself into the new flag carrier after the collapse of Swissair. Late on Monday, Swiss public authorities and companies unveiled a SFr4.24bn ($2.55bn) salvage plan, using Crossair to restore a national airline with a Zurich airport hub as well as save tens of thousands of jobs.

Companies call BPG 'Early Post' monopoly abuse

The Antwerp Chamber of Commerce is critical of a new service presented by Belgian Post Group (BPG). A BPG press release of 5 October states that the group will offer a new fast morning service tailored to the requirements of companies and the professions. This service guarantees that mail is delivered before 9 a.m. from 1 November onwards.

Brussels wants to protect couriers from French post office domination

The European Commission has given the French government two months in which to set up an independent regulatory body to ensure that fair trading reigns in the French postal services market. More specifically, the new authority will prevent the French post office (La Poste) from imposing tariffs and conditions on this market to the detriment of private courier companies
