Is this tomorrow's letterbox?

As mail order and e-commerce have exploded in recent years, the Post Office is looking at new ways to cope with the demand for home deliveries. Later this year the Post Office, now called Consignia, will begin trials of a new system where secure metal containers, the size of washing machines, are placed outside selected homes in several hundred London locations with an SW postcode. Each device, known as a Bear Box (right), has a computer code that allows it to be opened. Once the goods are deposited the customer is alerted via email or text message

Post Office must rethink retail contracts

The ACS has warned of a further drop in sub post office numbers unless the
Post Office Network makes the prospect of taking on a post office more
appealing to independent retailers. In a new report, the ACS Post Office Committee claims retailers’
relationships with the PON are “one sided, unduly restrictive and old
fashioned”.

Spar's combined c-store and post office debut

Spar has opened the UK’s first combined main post office and convenience store
in London this week. Rather than sectioning off the post office behind glass windows, the open plan
design at Westminster Bridge Road enables customers to pay for groceries,
apply for a passport, collect benefit and buy travellers’ cheques at the same
till.
