Poste Italiane (the Italian Post) has chosen XIRING’s Xi-Sign 4000 as the strong authentication solution for its online banking service, BancoPostaOnline.

Following a European call for tender, Poste Italiane selected XIRING and its Italian partner Sheltering, to provide strong authentication solutions to secure the company’s e-banking customers using the BancoPostaOnline service and BancoPostaClick, the new online current account of Poste Italiane. DHL Express Europe announces general rate increase

DHL Express Europe announced a general rate increase of 4-5 pct, due to take effect on December 1, 2008. The increase is in line with overall European inflation figures and has become necessary amid rising operating costs.

Scott Price, CEO DHL Express Europe said:” Inflation across Europe has been growing significantly since mid-May 2008. After having absorbed the higher cost base so far this year, the rate increase is a necessary measure to adjust to the current economic situation.

We are announcing our intention to increase prices early, in an effort to give our customers and partners the opportunity to adapt their own business planning for the year to come.”

All countries belonging to the Express Europe network will announce the price increase in line with their respective local inflation rates. DHL Express Europe evaluates the individual inflation rates in all countries on the basis of official sources at country levels, such as leading banks and central bureaus of statistics.

UPS tests zero-emission vehicle in the UK

UPS is currently trialling an eco-friendly, zero-emission delivery vehicle in central London that is powered by electricity, manufacturer Modec ZEV said.

The carbon-neutral van has been tested on routes in north-west, east and central London in recent months. On average, it makes 49 stops and covers some 18 miles per day, using only about 25 pct of its battery capacity.

The vehicle is the first of its kind to effectively harness the power of modern, high energy batteries to meet the medium-range, high performance requirements of urban delivery vehicles, Modec ZEV said.

UPS operates the largest private alternative fuel fleet in the transportation industry, including over 1,600 hybrid electric, CNG, LNG and propane-powered vehicles.

New body created after Energywatch and Postwatch merge (UK)

The formation of the new Consumer Focus organisation happens on 1st October – but some MPs remain to be convinced over its effectiveness.

Energywatch joined forces with two other campaigning groups to form a new, merged, watchdog today.

The gas and electricity consumers’ group, the National Consumer Council and Postwatch (which supervised the postal service) have now formed the new Consumer Focus organisation. It will function primarily as a voice for British people, lobbying the government for fairer treatment.

Around GBP 15 million a year in public money will go towards funding the organisation and the creation of a new ombudsman scheme – which is set to rule on customer complaints regarding both the energy and the postal sectors.

Business secretary John Hutton said: “These changes will help consumers get a better deal. One single body, rather than three, means a stronger voice holding business and government to account. It means a more joined up approach to tackling problems.”

He added: “Energy companies will have to take greater responsibility for handling complaints or face significant fines. And where complaints can’t be resolved voluntarily, new redress schemes give the system teeth.”

Nightfreight grows volume in home-delivery service

Nightfreight’s two-man home-delivery network has seen volumes grow by 20 pct over the past three months and 10 pct year-on-year, while a new customer win will boost volumes by a further 10 pct to 20 pct. In the summer, the firm added two new offerings to its two-man business – a pay-as-you-go service and a premium-to-home service – both of which have increased the firm’s business, says MD Peter Louden.

Under the premium-to-home service, Nightfreight offers a 48-hour delivery on mixed goods. “If there’s a time-critical delivery, then this service is ideal,” adds Louden. He adds that the focus for the next six months is to continue to grow volumes significantly in the two-man area. “Our strategy is to open up more two-man depots where we can – the closer we can get to our customers the better,” says Louden.
