HDNL awarded second OnLine Green Award by IMRG

Home Delivery Network Limited (HDNL) has picked-up its second Large Supplier of the Year award in IMRG’s Online Green Awards. Following its success in 2007, the UK’s largest dedicated home delivery and collection service has continued to build upon its achievements in reducing its carbon footprint and increasing efforts to deliver 300,000 parcels to every postcode, every day in the most environmentally friendly way possible.

Company focus this year was to be greener at the grass root level of the business, with an emphasis on cultural change throughout their structure. This grass roots approach engages all 6,500 members of staff across 72 locations and has proved extremely successful, allowing the company to reduce its utilities carbon usage by 490 tonnes for the 07/08 financial period, with other savings being made across the company.

The change has included small scale initiatives such as staff reducing energy expenditure by turning off lights, closing down computers and machinery when not in use. The introduction of more hand held terminals, allowing signatures to be recorded electronically and increasing online parcel tracking has reduced paper waste.

Swiss Post Delivers RFID to Its Parcel Centers, Transportation Hubs

The company is adding EPC Gen 2 tags to containers that shuttle mail and packages in and around nearly 50 facilities in Switzerland.

Swiss Post is rolling out the company’s third RFID application—this time a system to track 45,000 rolling container cages used to transport mail and packages at buildings throughout the Alpine country. Implementation of the application, believed to be the largest in Switzerland, began in October 2007 and will be completed by this October.

A public company that provides postal services to Switzerland, Swiss Post transports more than 1 million parcels per year. Wheeled container cages play an important role in transporting the parcels. Before Swiss Post decided to tag its rolling container cages, it had no reliable way to conduct an inventory of them. The company counted them manually every two years, a labor-intensive process that required an estimated 200 workdays involving two people at each location.

Swiss Post is investing 4 million Swiss francs (USD 3.6 million) in the project, which covers software, hardware and consulting fees. It expects to save 1.5 million Swiss francs (USD 1.4 million) a year because it won’t have to manually count the cages and will be able to manage the cages more effectively. By knowing how many cages are on hand and where they are physically located, it can make sure it has the right number of cages at each site in order to handle the expected volumes. The information will also help the company better manage the cages, transport them less between sites to meet demand and avoid delays due to unavailable cages.

trans-o-flex switches completely to eco-power

The trans-o-flex logistics group is the first operator of a full-coverage distribution network in Germany to switch its electricity supply completely to eco-power. The additional costs for eco-power amount to a five-figure Euro sum per year.

The decision is part of a sustainability strategy the company has been following for some years. In this connection, trans-o-flex compiled a complete CO2 statement for 2007 for the first time to identify where what quantities of the climate-change gas are being produced or caused. Changing to electricity from renewable sources alone will improve the Group’s CO2 record by between 4 and 5 pct.
