Itella’s automated parcel terminal pilot has ended

The three-month-long automated parcel terminal pilot at Itäkeskus in Helsinki ended at the end of May. All parties who took part in the trial were satisfied with the pilot.

“In particular, we received plenty of positive feedback from the consumers so, according to the pilot, the reception of the concept and manner of receiving parcels at the terminal was positive,” reports Aku Happo, Director of Itella’s Express and Parcel Business.
The costs of the automated concept rose higher than expected, and Itella has not yet made a decision on the future of the automated terminals. In addition, the decision-making schedule remains unclear.

The new automated parcel terminal enabled customers to choose between different options to receive their parcels. They could pick up a parcel from the post office or from an automated parcel terminal, which has 50-100 parcel lockers, or even have it delivered to their home.

Estonian Post could start issuing electronic ID cards

Eesti Päevaleht writes that the postal company announced its readiness to provide such services as issuing ID cards after the Ministry of Interior announced this week that it was going to close down a number of regional CMB offices because of downsizing.

Tiina Liitmäe, board member of Eesti Post, said that by law citizens can pick up their ID cards of passports in person from CMB offices. Since the availability of such offices will be reduced, Eesti Post is prepared to issue ID cards and passports in its postal offices.

Eesti Post says that in cooperation with the Social Welfare Board it already helps the state to pay out pensions and benefits.

Eesti Post has 495 postal offices all over the country.

TNT triples Thai express capacity

TNT has tripled its express service capacity in Thailand, opening a new hub in the Lam Luk Ka district, Pathum Thani, the Bangkok Post reports.

The hub is capable of handling 40 tonnes or 4,500 consignments per day.

The new hub integrates both warehouse and distribution centres under the one roof, designed to reduce transit time by at least two hours.

Southeast Asia is TNT’s fastest growing market, contributing 30 percent to their annual revenue from emerging markets of USD 11.5 billion.

TNT stated it has investment funds of USD 100 million to meet the growing freight service demand between China, Asia and Europe over the next five years.

This investment is part of TNT’s plan to turn Thailand into a hub for the Indochina market.

Royal Mail goes hands-on (UK)

Royal Mail is finalising contracts with a range of suppliers for the provision of handheld devices to track letter and parcel information.

By the end of this summer, more than 25,000 staff handling items tracked by special and recorded delivery will use the devices, which are intended to speed up and modernise postal processes.

The devices will enable Royal Mail van drivers to capture signatures at the point of delivery. The data will then be transmitted over a wireless network, allowing customers to check via the web whether or not items have arrived at their destination.

Royal Mail is in the final stages of making contractual adjustments with the pool of partners chosen to carry out the project.

While contracts await final sign-off, suppliers are understood to include hardware specialist Intermec and systems integrator CSC.

Training will be done in-house and will begin in the weeks prior to the implementation.

Some 70,000 staff who deliver items by foot or bicycle will continue using a paper-based system to record signatures and delivery times, but the devices will roll out to all postal delivery workers in the future.

Trials for the handheld computers began late last year.

The project is the first stage of Royal Mail’s GBP 1.2bn IT-based infrastructure upgrade and will underpin a series of customer-focused initiatives.
