DPD expands its business and enters the CIS markets

In response to the growing customer requirements for quality parcel and freight delivery within the CIS, DPD has taken a decision to enter the transportation logistics markets of these countries.
Partnerships with strong local players have already been formed in Kazakhstan and Ukraine; plans are in place to enter other CIS markets such as Belarus and Azerbaijan. Currently the development of an integrated road linehaul network in the CIS countries is under way. The opening of a number of branches in the CIS countries is planned, e.g. in Kazakhstan alone there will be between 9 and 12 branches by 2013.
The range and quality of transportation logistics solutions to be offered by DPD subsidiaries in the CIS will be similar to those provided in Russia.
These changes have driven the need to optimize the structure of corporate governance. Effective April 8th, Sergey Kruglov, until recently General Director of Armadillo Group, has taken up the role of CEO Russia and CIS Cluster. Nikolay Voinov was appointed Armadillo Group General Director (DPD in Russia).

UK Competition in Delivery

Postcomm is seeking views on potential barriers to competition in delivery, the so-called ‘final mile’ in the UK postal sector.

As part of the regulator’s forward work plan it is assessing the potential benefits of delivery competition, particularly in ensuring a healthy universal service and supporting a range of reliable, innovative and efficient postal services, including a universal service reflecting the needs of users, valued by customers, and delivered through a successful Royal Mail and a sustainable competitive market.

While competition through access agreements has developed quickly since Royal Mail negotiated the first such agreement in 2004, competition in delivery has actually declined for the last two years.

Postcomm has already identified a number of possible barriers, and the regulator is seeking views on new and emerging issues affecting the growth of competition in delivery.

FS enters the logistics market

Italian Railways has set up a joint venture with the Italian post office aimed at securing a share of the market for transporting high-value goods and packages. Italia Logistica was launched on February 28 when FS and Gruppo Poste Italiane announced that they were merging the activities of their respective subsidiaries Omnia Logistica and SDA Logistica following the signing of a letter of intent last year.

Italia Logistica will use the strengths of the two parent organisations to offer door-to-door services using pick-up and collection by road and long-haul transport by rail. The company plans to use the latest IT to manage and track consignments and to develop a range of new services.

Chief Executive Mauro Moretti said FS had added a new activity to its range of products and that the business would operate in a ‘very competitive market’. The move followed rationalisation and relaunch of the freight business which included plans to work more closely with Italian ports. Italia Logistica will focus on integrated services for high-value distribution including urban logistics, ‘reverse logistics’ when customers return products to suppliers, and the catering sector.
