The progress of Itella Logistics in Estonia’s consumer parcel markets continues

Itella is continuing its rapid advances in the Estonian consumer parcel markets and launching, in addition to the automatic parcel terminal pilot project, the distribution of consumer parcels in three R-Kiosks in Estonia. In the first phase, parcels will be delivered in the R-Kiosks of the Nurmenuku Centre (Õismägi), the Magistrali Centre (Mustamägi), and the Smuuli Neste in Tallinn (Lasnamägi).

“The co-operation about to be launched with the R-Kiosks supports our objectives of establishing our own extensive distribution network for consumer parcels in Estonian markets. The R-Kiosks and the automated parcel terminals that we introduced in March offer consumers the possibility to select the place for parcel pickup that is most convenient for them. The R-Kiosk network is extensive, and these outlets are well suited to parcel delivery,” explains Aku Happo, Director of Express Business Line.

During the trial period, Estonian consumers can receive products ordered through Anttila.ee by visiting a nearby R-Kiosk instead of the local post office. The arrival of a parcel will be announced with a text message. In connection with picking up their parcels, end users will be requested to provide feedback for further development of the service concept.

Royal Mail – Five Nominations in World Mail Awards

Royal Mail has been shortlisted for the World Mail Awards 2008 in no less than five categories.

So far, Royal Mail has been nominated for five categories based on it’s Carbon Management Programme (Corporate Social Responsibility), International Mail Technical Website & Bag labelling System (Customer Service), Redelivery Online (E-commerce), Redelivery Online (Innovation), and for CodEffect (technology

The World Mail Awards are the most publicised and well known awards in the mail industry, although it is though that the judges are having such a tough time deciding who merits the top prize in each category this year, the results may not be announced until May.

The purpose of the awards is to recognise best practice in the mail industry. They are open to application by any postal operator, public or private. Some of the awards are also open to post office retail networks and to industry suppliers, such as equipment manufacturers or postal technology providers.

Strike threat looms over Royal Mail centre closure

Union officials have warned that postal strikes in Coventry and Warwickshire are looking increasingly inevitable after Royal Mail confirmed it will continue with plans to move its mailing centre from Coventry to Northampton, a closure the Communication Workers Union (CWU) has claimed will displace 500 employees.
Royal Mail has ruled out seven sites proposed by Coventry City Council and the CWU for a proposed combined Coventry and Northampton mail centre between junctions 15 and 16 of the M1.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) Coventry branch communications officer Simon Gatherer told printweek.com that of the 1,000 employees working in and around the Coventry centre, 500 are at risk of unemployment.

Gatherer warned that if the Royal Mail continued with its plans and didn’t show willing to reconsider, then industrial action was an increasingly likely option.

Gatherer called the whole process “cloak and dagger” and said that if the process continued, “we will have to ballot our members for strike action, which at this rate, won’t be long”.
A spokesman for Royal Mail responded to the claims, telling printweek.com “the process is ongoing. We’ve looked at all the suggested sites but we need to secure the future of Royal Mail in an increasingly competitive environment.”
They added that Royal Mail would work with each employee individually to secure the best position possible.
“We can offer a good support package if they want to move the new site or we can offer them access to any positions that come up in around the Coventry area, including our Parcelforce hub at the airport.”
Talks between Royal Mail and the CWU are ongoing.

Business update for first quarter 2008 presented at TNT AGM

Amongst the items on the agenda of the Annual General Meeting of Shareholders on 11th April, are the appointment of new members to the Supervisory Board, the reappointment of one member of the Supervisory Board and two members of the Board of Management and the dividend proposal. During his presentation on the developments in 2007, TNT CEO Peter Bakker will discuss the 2007 results, collective labour agreement negotiations with the trade unions and the liberalisation of the postal market.

As regards the first quarter of 2008, TNT will give an update on developments in the company’s business. The underlying business in Q1 2008, taking into account the influence of phasing of the public holidays and the fewer working days, developed broadly in line with the outlook given on 18 February 2008.

Express volume growth in Q1 2008, corrected for the impact of fewer working days, was in line with the volume growth in Q4 2007, as previously announced. The yield, as a measure of the price development, was higher than in both Q1 and Q4 2007. Timing of Easter, this year in Q1 and last year in Q2, has impacted operating income with comparable effects as in previous years. This impact should be reversed in Q2 2008.

Developments in the Mail division are also broadly in line with the outlook provided on 18 February. TNT again confirms the target of EUR 110 million master plan savings to be realised in 2008/2009 through efficiency measures.

TNT will finalise its current share buyback programme of up to EUR 500 million, as announced earlier, by the middle of 2008. The remaining EUR 200 million will be realised in the next few months.

TNT will publish its 2008 first quarter results on 28 April. As usual, on the publication of the quarterly figures TNT will also give an update on the outlook for the current year. Developments so far are in line with the outlook given on 18 February.
