The Belgian Post Office chooses the Esker FlyDoc technology for its on demand Click & Post Mail Service

The Belgian post office, La Poste – De Post, leader in postal services and in the document processing chain in Belgium, has chosen to OEM the technology and infrastructure of Fly Doc by Esker, the world leader in business document automation, in order to develop its “Click & Post” mail sending service. The partnership is based on the “Software as a Service” model (SaaS), which is part of the Esker international expansion strategy for the mail on demand market: a market estimated at over 800 million mail items per year in France alone.

In order to facilitate and simplify the life of Belgian users, the Belgian post office will launch its new “Click & Post” service this year to enable Belgian companies to send their mail, on demand, directly from their computer or their company applications (i.e. marketing mailings, invoices, registered mail, invitations). Instead of wasting time handling paper and envelopes, the users will be able to send mail as easily as an e-mail without leaving their desk.

Esker is proposing a pay-as-you-go service to the Belgian post office as a full application that includes a virtual printer and a web interface in the “Click & Post” design for Belgian companies, an Internet hosting infrastructure, including fifty servers to receive and process the requests from the customers of the Belgian post office 24/7, and On demand post production facilities set up at eXbo, a subsidiary of the Belgian post office.

Postcomm confirms changes following review of 2006-10 Price Control

Postcomm, the independent regulator for postal services, has, following a consultation, decided to confirm its proposals made in August 2007 that Royal Mail should be given extra flexibility to increase some retail prices and that access margins should be left unchanged. These decisions are in response to the requests by Royal Mail, TNT Post and UK Mail for a review of some aspects of the 2006-10 Price Control.

As set out in Postcomm’s proposals document published in August, this decision would allow Royal Mail to raise the price of a second class stamp to 29p by 2010, subject to inflation (the original price cap was 26p). The price cap on a first class stamp will not be affected by this decision.

In addition, Postcomm has decided to reject the requests from Royal Mail, TNT Post and UK Mail to change the margin between Royal Mail’s prices for bulk mail products and the amount Royal Mail charges other mail operators for access to its network and delivery of bulk mail over the ‘final mile’. Royal Mail had wanted to reduce the margin and the two Access operators argued that it should be increased.

TNT signs book deal with Gardners

TNT Express has signed a three-year deal to provide delivery services for Gardners Books. Under the multi-million pound agreement, TNT will collect stock from the headquarters of the UK’s largest book wholesaler in Eastbourne, East Sussex, and distribute it to hundreds of independent books stores around the UK.

TNT says the deal is “its first major venture into the wholesale book market” and “an exciting new business element for the company’s burgeoning media and entertainment division”. The firm took over the contract after Gardners’ previous deal with Parcel-force expired.

Danny Geach, general manager, TNT media and entertainment, says: “This market is worth in excess of GBP 180m a year and we see this as a real opportunity. “We believe we won the contract because we are able to provide a high-quality service at a reasonable cost.”

DHL Express has opened a new depot in the southern Spanish city of Murcia and is considering opening an air hub at a new airport south of Madrid, according to media reports.

The company has invested EUR 6 million in the 4,200 sqm Murcia depot which has capacity to sort up to 2,700 parcels an hour, the Deutsche Verkehrs-Zeitung reported. DHL expects to distribute about 3,500 parcels a day to Murcia and the surrounding region.

Meanwhile, Spanish business newspaper Expansión reported that authorities at Don Quijote Airport at Ciudad Real, south of Madrid and Toledo, are in discussions with DHL Express over an air cargo operation. DHL Express has its main air hub for Spain and Portugal at Vitoria, in the northern Basque region.

The privately-financed EUR 1.1 billion airport, currently under construction and now expected to open in spring 2008, aims to position itself as a strategically located base for air cargo and low-cost flights. It lies close to major north-south, east-west motorways, and will benefit from a stop on Madrid-Seville high-speed passenger line.
