Geodis is acquiring Rohde & Liesenfeld (R&L)

Geodis is acquiring Rohde & Liesenfeld (R&L), its main freight forwarding partner, for EUR 77 million. Reinforcing its strength in the freight forwarding business, Geodis is taking positions in the German and South African markets and deepening its Latin American network.

Rohde & Liesenfeld (R&L), the Geodis network’s main partner since 2002, is a German-based international air and sea freight forwarding group. Its 2007 net revenue is forecasted to be EUR 270 million (excluding Customs revenue), attributable to both freight forwarding and industrial projects. R&L operates mainly in Germany (34 pct of revenue), Latin America (17 pct), South Africa (16 pct) and Australia/New Zealand (14 pct) and has 710 employees.

The acquisition of R&L will broaden the geographic reach of the Geodis Wilson network, which will gain a significant position in Germany, thereby making Geodis Wilson a major player in German freight forwarding. This acquisition will also enable Geodis to serve new international markets – particularly South Africa, where R&L is well established – and substantially deepen its presence in Latin America. In addition, the Group will benefit from R&L’s expertise in handling industrial projects, especially in the oil and gas industry.

On this basis, R&L’s enterprise value has been estimated at EUR 90 million and Geodis will acquire its shares for EUR 77 million.

Royal Mail stops Sunday collections

Royal Mail is to stop Sunday collections from post boxes and business from tomorrow.

The company, which introduced the service in 1990, had collected from 18,000 post boxes across the UK each Sunday.

But it said there was limited customer demand and that Sunday collections accounted for less than 1 pct of all mail posted each week.

Royal Mail said it also cost four times as much to handle Sunday mail compared to items collected on other days.

Information on the affected post boxes has been changed and those in areas of high usage will be monitored and emptied if there is a risk of overflowing.

Postal watchdog Postwatch carried out a survey into the demand for Sunday collections earlier this year and found that 68 pct of people said they used the service ‘very seldom’ or ‘never’.

Hermes makes good start in Austria

Hermes Logistik said it has made a good start in Austria following its entry into the country’s domestic consumer parcels market in July this year.

Oliver Klingbeil, managing director of Hermes Logistik Austria, told media representatives that the company has so far handled about 1.4 million parcels and was “very satisfied” with its market entry. About 90 pct of the parcels had been generated from parent company Otto Group, which has switched its parcels business away from Austrian Post.

Klingbeil reiterated the aim of achieving a 20 pct share of the Austrian B2C market. It has been reported that Quelle plans to switch part of its Austrian parcels business to Hermes.

Hermes Logistik is currently operating with six hubs, 29 depots and 1,200 parcel shops in Austria. Handling and sorting is provided by DPD Austria, the B2B parcels company in which Austrian Post had a minority share until 2005.
