Itella and Alma Media partner up in eCommerce

Itella and Alma Media have concluded a co-operation agreement pertaining to Alma Media’s new Mikko.fi eCommerce concept. Itella will offer mailing and transport services to Alma Media’s web service customers as of 15 September, and Mikko.fi will also serve as a marketing channel for Itella’s services.

At the Mikko.fi portal, owned and maintained by Alma Media, service users can sell, buy, rent or auction goods and services over the Internet. Both consumers and corporations can act as sellers.

The web service places Itella’s parcel services comprehensively at the sellers’ disposal, including parcel address label printing, pricing and transport services. As a seller places a product for sale with the service, (s)he can select the required delivery method for it, price the item and print an address label using a personal computer. Simultaneously, the information is transferred into Itella’s transport system.

The identifier on the address label allows both the recipient and the seller of the parcel to track its route on the Internet, and advance notification of the arriving parcel will be sent as a text message or eLetter. The parcel will be delivered either directly to the recipient’s home address or the nearest post office. Later, the aim is to link further Itella services to the Mikko.fi service, in support of buying and selling on the Internet. Itella Group uses the name Posti on the Mikko.fi portal, providing consumer services under that name.

Deutsche Post rejects EU allegation It misused government subsidies

German postal services and logistics company Deutsche Post AG said Wednesday it rejects the allegation made by the European Commission that it misused German government subsides.

The European Commission Wednesday said it has opened an investigation to probe all public funds granted to Deutsche Post since 1989.

Deutsche Post spokesman Dirk Klasen said it was “incomprehensible” that Germany and Deutsche Post – which are leading European postal service liberalization – were being investigated by the commission.

E.U. law states that every country’s national post company is bound to serve all regions in that country, including those which are unprofitable because they are hard to reach or are sparsely populated.

The commission said earlier Wednesday that Deutsche Post’s competitors allege the former monopoly used this money to expand commercial activities and to sell services too cheaply to its subsidiaries DHL and Postbank AG, which is banned under E.U. law.

DHL introduces e-invoicing to improve efficiencies

DHL shared its e-invoicing experiences with delegates at the EXPP European Summit 2007 in London. DHL is automating its accounts receivable (AR) processes across Europe with an e-invoicing service from Accountis Europe Ltd, an international provider of secure financial document exchange and payment systems.

Brian Thumwood, e-billing programme manager for DHL, spoke to around 300 delegates at the e-invoicing and e-billing summit, where he launched the company’s Flash demonstration of its e-invoicing application.

The Flash demonstration takes customers through the e-invoicing process step-by-step, allowing them to see the many benefits it will bring to their business before they register.

With the implementation of Accountis EIPP (Electronic Invoicing Presentment and Payment), all DHL’s paper invoices from 13 European countries will now be generated and delivered electronically, resulting in a much faster and cost-effective process for DHL and its European customers. DHL’s operations in Belgium and Switzerland have been the first to experience the benefits of Accountis EIPP, with the remaining 11 countries coming online in the near future.

Royal Mail faces further strikes

Postal workers threatened to stage further strikes by the end of the month unless a bitter row over pay and conditions is resolved.

As the Communication Workers Union announced the move and the Royal Mail vowed to press on with its modernization plans, Brendan Barber, TUC general secretary, held out the prospect of coordinated industrial action in the months to come.

Mr. Barber said unions would be brought together under the umbrella of the TUC’s public service liaison committee and said that the government would pay “a heavy price” if it did not pay attention to the warnings. With more than 2m public sector workers in dispute over pay and job threats it is understood the committee will meet shortly.

Royal Mail said that it could “no longer delay the next steps in modernizing the business to enable it to compete on an equal footing with other operators and will now begin to make the changes which have been discussed with our people and our trade unions for many months”. The CWU claims that up to 40,000 jobs could be lost as a result of the proposals.

The union said that there had been “significant progress” in areas such as pay but Royal Mail had refused to budge on its pension proposals which would mean closing the existing scheme to new employees, raising employee contributions and increasing the retirement age.

There was also disagreement over the start time for early shifts which could reduce earnings of some workers by up to Pounds 25 a week. According to the union, Royal Mail was offering a two-year deal worth 6.7 per cent compared with its previous one-year offer worth 2.5 per cent.

Royal Mail said it had offered CWU both a short-term resolution to the dispute within the amount available for pays this year, as well as a longer-term solution “which we believe is in the interests of all our people and the business”.
