Panalpina sees big savings from port centric distribution

The client previously managed its own supply chain once product arrived at the UK port of entry; however this was proving to be complex and costly. Now Panalpina has taken charge of the final stage of the journey using Import Services and TNT to provide two distinct services once Panalpina has moved product in sea containers, from origin to Southampton port.

Express carrier TNT collects store ready consignments from the containers at its Southampton port based depot, before putting them into its national distribution network in readiness for next day delivery to high street retailers throughout the UK.

Import Services takes the residual bulk stock into its adjacent distribution centre where storage, order processing, high volume pick/pack and distribution of replenishment orders are affected.

Distributing goods straight from the port of entry is becoming increasingly popular as it can offer cost and time savings. “We have developed port centric distribution successfully for our clients such as Flair and Carte Blanche in the toy and gift sector,” said Mike Thomas of Import Services. “Our clients demand swift movement of their products to market and retail trends also show smaller volume orders are required in store more frequently. The savings gained from port centric distribution simply outperforms traditional models of moving goods inland to distribution centers.

Raben Polska in System Alliance Europe

In July 2007 Raben Polska became a member of System Alliance Europe. The association is a network of over 47 international forwarding companies in 21 countries. The SAE members are mainly private and family medium-sized transport companies. Therefore, the partners of the Alliance combine the power of European forwarding network with their own experience gained in the local market. The membership in System Alliance Europe will enable Raben Customers easer access to European markets and increase the availability of information on distributed goods.

Raben Polska’s membership in the association indicates high quality of services rendered by the company as the selection of SAE partners in a given country is based mainly on this criterion. High standards of services rendered by SAE members are monitored regularly. On the basis of this monitoring corrective measures are taken where necessary in order to maintain adequate level of service.

It is worth mentioning here that Raben Polska is the second one, after Birkart Systemverkehre, company of the Raben Group which is the member of System Alliance Europe’s partners.

TNT ranks first in Dow Jones Sustainability Index 2007 – Company achieves highest score in entire index

TNT ranks first in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) 2007. The final results were announced today in Zurich by SAM research, one of the co-founders of the index. TNT improved its score from 84 in 2006 to 91 this year, reaching both the leading position in the super sector “Industrial Goods and Services” (which includes Transportation) and the highest score of any company in the DJSI.

According to SAM Research, TNT ‘has consistently improved not only its sustainability reporting but also its sustainability performance’. The company achieved particularly good results in the areas of risk and crisis management, human capital development, stakeholder engagement and environmental management. Concrete initiatives like Planet Me, TNT’s program to cut CO2 emissions, further underpin the group’s leadership role.

Peter Bakker, CEO of TNT, commented: ‘This is the third time in a row that TNT ranks first in its sector, but it is the first time we achieve an overall number one position with the highest score in the entire index. I am very proud of this result and warmly thank all our staff who have made it possible. This will further stimulate us to develop initiatives like Planet Me and Moving the World, TNT’s partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme, to the next level and sustain our leadership position.’
