DHL Express Hungary launches regular cargo service from FlyBalaton

German express delivery company DHL Express will start operating a weekly five cargo flights from the FlyBalaton airport in Sarmellek (SW Hungary), the airport told MTI on Monday.

FlyBalaton recently completed a EUR 2.5m air cargo base with the aim of turning the airport into a regional logistics base.

DHL is renting the necessary infrastructure at the airport. It is also paying to have its aircraft service there.

UK postal union extends strike suspension until Sunday for further talks

A UK postal union has agreed to extend a suspension of planned strikes for a further five days to resolve a pay row with Royal Mail.

The Communication Workers Union, which suspended planned industrial action on Aug 10 until today after agreeing to enter a new round of talks with Royal Mail, said the two sides would extend their negotiations until Sun Sept 9 ‘to resolve all issues in dispute’.

Union members have already held two 24-hour strikes and a week of rolling walkouts in the row about Royal Mail’s 2.5 pct pay offer and planned job cuts.

The mail operator says increased automation is necessary to deal with ‘the harsh commercial reality’ of the market.

Corrreios of Portugal improves financial results and performace during H1 2007

Correios of Portugal presented the audited financial results for the first 6 months of 2007.

During the first half 2007, CTT distributed dividends for EUR 24.77 millions, correspondent to the result of 2006.

The net results for the first half 2007 is EUR 27.5 million and represents a growing of 224 pct in comparation to the same period in 2006. The results are due the best operational performance results.

The company intensified 3 key factors during these months: growing, rentability and value of the shareholder, as part of the plan for improving the quality service.

The operational profits raised 3.9 pct and represents EUR 410,2 million. There is a positive growing in all business areas, with a better performance for parcel and express services, which registered a growing of 10.8 pct.

The consolidate EBITDA raised 44.5 pct and a profit margin of 13.9 pc which represents 3.3 pct better performarce in comparation to the last period.

The consolidated operational results raised 153 pct and represents EUR 42.1 million, and the consolidated operational margin raised 10.3 pct and represents 6.1 pct respect to the previous period.

The global indicator of quality service during the first half 2007 is 138.8 which compares the objective of 100. The main actions implemented for the good results were: new organization model of service network for clients, integrated to the process of customer service, distribution and sales, a reorganization of sales force, improvement of client management in key accounts and corporate clients, acquisition of capital (30 pct) of Campos Envelopagem, S.A and incorporation of this company to Mailtec TI, acquisition of 6 sort mailing machines.

The compay is also planning a relaunch of Correios bank and benchmarking of similar experiences of postal operators.

Scots deliver worst class post in Britain

Scotland has the worst postal service in the UK, according to the Royal Mail’s own figures.

The six poorest performing postcode areas in Britain for delivering first-class mail the next day are north of the Border.

Lerwick, Kirkcaldy, Borders, Dundee, Falkirk and the Hebrides had the lowest percentage of post delivered on time in the first quarter of 2007.

In Scotland, only Glasgow managed to scrape into the top 20 best performing areas, in 18th place.

Lerwick in the Shetlands had just 45.3 per cent of first-class mail arriving on time, compared with Watford where 96.7 per cent was delivered next day.

Across Britain, Royal Mail achieved 93 per cent of first-class post delivered the next working day, meeting their UK minimum target.

The company met their local minimum target of 91.5 per cent of first-class post delivered the next working day in 98 of the 118 UK postcode areas.

But this target was only achieved in eight of the 16 Scots postcode areas.

Royal Mail manager John Manson said: “Unfortunately, for the first quarter of 2007-8 our quality of service to customers in the east of Scotland postcode areas was below our usual high standard.

“This was because of a short period of unofficial industrial action, which had a knock-on effect.
