MRW opens five new outlets in Spain

Spanish domestic express carrier MRW has opened another five new franchises in the country, as it continues its wave of expansion.

The new outlets are one each in Pontevedra, Madrid and Avila, and two in Huelva, bringing its total number of branches to 783 in Spain, Gibraltar and Andorra, and also Portugal.

Its new franchise in Madrid, at Villanueva de la Cañada on the western outskirts of the city, brings to 79 the number of MRW outlets in the Madrid region, 44 of which are in the centre of the capital.

Earlier this summer, the company announced the opening of a new EUR 17 million hub in Barcelona and new platforms in San Sebastian and Granada.

MRW is one of Spain’s fastest-growing couriers, with over 10,000 staff, 5,000 vehicles and three aircraft. Last year revenues grew 9 pct to EUR 564 million.

Hunt for new Royal Mail boss called off

The search for a successor to Allan Leighton, the chairman of Royal Mail, has been abandoned by the Government.

Allan Leighton’s term as chairman of Royal Mail ends next March;

The move follows attempts to persuade a number of high-profile businessmen to accept the job.

Whitehall sources insisted the decision had nothing to do with the failure to find a replacement. Instead, they said, the priority had been to strengthen the board in other ways, such as through the appointment of non-executive directors, and added that the search could be resurrected.

The Government first advertised for the position of deputy chairman last autumn in what was widely seen as a precursor to appointing a successor to Leighton. However, approaches to several businessmen, including Sir Philip Hampton, the chairman of J Sainsbury, and Sir John Parker, the chairman of National Grid, failed. Hampton was widely seen as the frontrunner but it is believed he rejected the offer as the Government refused to commit itself to a full privatization of the organization. Leighton’s term ends next March and it is believed he would be happy to stay on for a third term.

An Post and government to finalize television license arrangements

A new agreement on the collection of television license fees is being finalized between An Post and the government, which will require the provision of new detailed information on home inspection data and levels of evasion, writes Samantha McCaughren.

About E200 million is collected in license fees every year, but RTE has raised concerns about the level of evasion in license fee collection several times and claims it is twice that in Britain.

It estimates that around 16 per cent of eligible households do not hold a valid television license. For the first time, An Post will have a service level agreement (SLA) with the Department of Communications governing the issue.

The department will also have some new obligations under the contract. It is understood the agreement will have to be put in place prior to the negotiation of a new collection contract, which takes place every year.
