TNT pilots two zero emission trucks in Rotterdam – First electric delivery vehicles in mainland Europe

Ivo Opstelten (Mayor of Rotterdam and Chairman of the Rotterdam Climate Initiative) and Peter Bakker (CEO of TNT) presented the two Smith electrical trucks which will be piloted in the Rotterdam area as part of the Rotterdam Climate Initiative.

The vehicles, a 3.5-tonne Smith Edison EV and a 9-tonne Smith Newton EV, will operate emission free in congested areas. The pilot is a significant step to contribute to the objective to reduce CO2 emissions by half in Rotterdam by 2025 compared to 1990.

The Edison will be operational around the center of Rotterdam and will make an average of approximately 40 stops for pick up and delivery of documents and small parcels. The Newton will operate in and around the center of Rotterdam and make 15 to 20 stops when in operation. It is in these stop-start conditions where the electric trucks have a great advantage over conventional combustion engines which are at their most inefficient and most polluting.

The green electricity for running these vehicles is certified to be produced by hydropower. This means that operating the vehicles is entirely CO2 neutral.

Electric Vehicles work out the more cost effective option than diesel vans or trucks, when taken over the average commercial vehicle’s 5-year life span. This is due to low fuel costs as electricity costs a fraction of diesel. Further the maintenance costs are lower for an electric vehicle than for a conventional combustion vehicle. The electric vehicle only has four moving parts compared to over a thousand in a diesel drive train.

Logibag secures a new contract with LaPoste

Logibag, the locker management and service company that is a subsidiary of ByBox Ltd, has won a new contract with La Poste to supply, install and maintain an undisclosed number of its Cityssimo V2 postal lockers at locations across France.

The contract has been signed with Coliposte, the parcel division of La Poste following successful trials with the Cityssimo Version 1 locker during 2006.

The first order forming part of the new contract has been received and the V2 units are scheduled for installation in August. The lockers will be used to facilitate consumer deliveries, i.e. those times when it is more convenient to collect a parcel from a locker in a chosen location than wait somewhere for it to be delivered – a service that is becoming increasingly popular in Europe.

Meanwhile, the consumer interface has been improved and now includes a 15-inch color touch-screen that will accept credit card payments and print self-adhesive postage labels for parcel shipping applications.

Czech state prepares major state owned companies for sale – report

The Czech government is preparing the remaining major state-owned companies for privatization but may keep a controlling stake in some of them, the weekly Euro reported today.

The Czech post office services provider Ceska Posta will likely be divided into several units, some of which will be up for grabs in a privatization, while others will remain under state control, the weekly said, without citing sources.

Prague airport, Letiste Praha, whose value is estimated at 100 bln crowns, may be split between the Prague municipality, which will acquire a 34 pct stake, and the finance ministry, which will keep the rest.

However, the 66 pct stake should later be sold as the Czech transportation ministry may require half of the proceeds for the state fund of transportation infrastructure, Euro reports, citing unnamed sources.

Brewery Budejovicky Budvar may offer its shares in an initial public offering, after it is transformed into a joint stock company, according to the minister of agriculture Petr Gandalovic.

TNT Post becomes major postal provider for the Welsh public sector

This month, TNT Post’s South West & South Wales team has started handling mail for two NHS Trusts in the Welsh public sector in what is predicted to be the biggest postal deal in the country since full deregulation of the postal service in 2006.

The deal will see TNT Post work collaboratively with Value Wales, under the OGC Buying Solutions Framework as a supplier to public sector organizations in Wales. By working in partnership with Value Wales, TNT Post will look to handle across the Public Sector over 100,000 items a day by the end of the first year, resulting in the Welsh tax payer saving an estimated GBP 1 million.

The first bodies to work with TNT Post will be the Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust and Gwent Healthcare NHS Trusts. Together they will pass an estimated 12,000 mail items daily to TNT Post in South Wales and as a result of these savings, the Trusts will be able to channel this money into the delivery of their front-line services.

TNT Post in the South West & South Wales has to date secured a number of significant customer wins during the first six months of trading and now has more than 50 customers in the area.
