Deutsche Post concerned about unfair competition in Europe

Klaus Zumwinkel, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Deutsche Post, has expressed concerns about the failure of the liberalization of postal markets in Europe, the comprehensive and country-wide provision of postal services for Germany, job security at Deutsche Post and the social standards offered by new postal service providers.

Zumwinkel urged the German government and parliament to work vigorously to create fair competitive conditions for the full opening of the German and European postal market.

Zumwinkel said that in recent years Deutsche Post has done its homework, become one of the world’s most modern postal companies and solidly positioned itself in international business. In the current situation the course is set for the functionality of Germany’s postal service and the future of Deutsche Post, he said. Customers and employees should not be the ones to pay the price for these decisions, he said. Following the fundamental political decisions about privatization in 1989/90 and the initial public offering in 2000, the company is now facing a kind of “Postal Reform III,” Zumwinkel said. Binding regulations for the long-term development of the sector must be introduced, the chairman said.

Deutsche Post World Net boosts revenue and earnings

Deutsche Post World Net concluded the first half of 2007, boosting both revenue and EBIT. Consolidated revenue rose by 5.4 percent to 30.9 billion euros, fueled by the contributions of all divisions in the Group. EBIT increased by 9 percent to 1.7 billion euros. Before non-recurring items, the increase totaled 12.4 percent.

The earnings growth was fueled by the LOGISTICS and EXPRESS divisions. “The LOGISTICS division continued its strong earnings growth, and the EXPRESS division made major progress,” Klaus Zumwinkel, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Deutsche Post World Net, said at the half-year press conference in Bonn. For the entire year, the Group continues to expect a positive business development. “We can confirm our guidance that the underlying EBIT will total at least 3.6 billion euros for the entire fiscal year of 2007,” Zumwinkel said. During the first half, consolidated net profit after minorities totaled 784 million euros, an increase of 7.1 percent over the same period last year. Earnings per share were 65 cents, compared with 61 cents. In the second quarter, consolidated net profit climbed 13.1 percent to 285 million euros. Earnings per share rose to 24 cents from 21 cents, accordingly. Thus, growth of the consolidated net profit outpaced growth in revenue and EBIT. On a quarterly basis, revenue climbed 6.5 percent to 15.4 billion euros, and EBIT totaled 703 million euros, a jump of 9.5 percent over the same period last year.

Access to Postal Services: A Final Report for Postcomm

In this report for Postcomm — the independent regulator for postal services in the UK — a NERA team led by Senior Consultant Leela Barham, Consultant Simon Maunder, and former Director John Dodgson sets out NERA’s recommendations on criteria for accessing UK postal services. NERA was commissioned to:

Identify the current and future needs of postal users in relation to access to postal services. Access to the universal postal service means the use of access points capable of receiving large postal packets and special delivery.
Develop criteria that takes account of the way that the provision of access to postal services is changing (e.g., mobile offices) by suggesting a minimum number of opening hours, physical accessibility, and how in relation to communities and any other relevant factors this should be measured, with a particular consideration to meeting the reasonable needs of more vulnerable users and SMEs.
Develop recommendations on access to the universal postal service through post boxes and Post Offices, and how this should be measured, taking into account the reasonable needs of users.
Undertake a mapping exercise to examine access points in relation to a) Royal Mail’s license (but not using the straight line method); b) Department for Trade and Industry (now the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform) criteria for the Post Office network; and c) any new access criteria suggested by NERA.

This research will help Postcomm to provide advice to the Government on access criteria, and is part of the regulator’s work leading up to Royal Mail’s price control in 2010. Learn more about NERA’s role in this project.

An eye to the future

Environmental initiatives, such as the WEEE Directive, the ongoing growth of the online sector, and rapid technological developments mean predicting what the retail landscape will look like in the years to come is a tricky business.

This year’s Retail Solutions exhibition at the Birmingham NEC allowed retailers to view technology that can benefit their business both now, and in the future. The show, and in particular the Store of the Future exhibit, (see boxout on pg.51) drew the attention of both national and local press. The Magic Mirror, part of the Store of the Future, features both RFID bar code scanning and multimedia functions, and was featured in the Daily Telegraph, Daily Mail, Birmingham Post and other international publications.

The seminar theatres offered delegates the chance to hear some of the industry’s top figures debating pressing issues facing retailers today. Representatives from Tesco, McDonalds, Dixons DSGi, Boots Alliance and Poundstretcher offered their thoughts on PCI:DSS, multi-channel retailing, fraud and loss prevention and international growth strategy.

Geodis plans French express acquisition

Geodis has signed a letter of intent to buy a French courier company called “46 Express” to strengthen its domestic express business. The deal was signed in July, according to the company’s half-year report.

“In July, Geodis signed a letter of intend to acquire the 46 Express group before the end of the year. This acquisition will deepen our express delivery network in France,” the company wrote. No further information about the company to be acquired was immediately available.

Meanwhile, Geodis has announced half-year results, with strong revenue growth following the February acquisition of freight forwarder Wilson (formerly TNT Freight Management). Consolidated revenue, including Wilson, rose by 22.1% to over €2,300 million, including 4.1% growth based on a comparable scope of consolidation and at constant exchange rates.

Revenue in France expanded by 5.9% to €1,394 million, led by steady growth in Groupage (LTL) and Freight Forwarding volumes, the company announced. Express revenues grew by 12% in the first half of 2007, boosted by the launch of pick-up and delivery operations for FedEx, Geodis said.

Express operating profit was stable with the positive effects of higher volumes and “ effective pricing policies” offset by higher operating costs and the start of a major new express contract, Geodis said in its H1 report. The company does not release express revenue or volume figures.

The company’s overall H1 consolidated operating profit fell to EUR 44.5 million, including EUR 14.1 million worth of Wilson integration costs, from EUR 53.1 million in first-half 2006. Net profit declined to EUR 14.2 million versus EUR 21.6 million in H1, 2006.
