DHL celebrates 35 years in Singapore with new SGD 9 million service center investment

DHL announced the official opening of its SGD 9 million (GBP 2.9 million) eXpo Service Centre at Changi South to mark the company’s 35 years in Singapore.

Over the past three and a half decades, Singapore has grown to play an increasingly important role for DHL in Asia Pacific. Singapore is in a key economic region, and as one of DHL’s major logistics hubs in Asia Pacific, DHL Express Singapore is expected to increase its cargo handling capacity to more than 10.5 million shipments by the year 2011, with the opening of the new service center.

Spanning a total site area of more than 76,600 sq feet (7,100sqm), the eXpo Service Centre at Changi South is the largest service center operated by DHL Express Singapore. At present, it handles more than 240,000 shipments per month, two times more than the average handling capacity of DHL Express’ other centers in Singapore.

The eXpo Service Centre will further enhance efficiency and speed in cargo processing, providing customers with better time-to-market capabilities. The service center, together with DHL Express’ four other service centers strategically-located island-wide at Airport Cargo Road, Paya Lebar, Jurong and one located centrally at Tanjong Pagar, seamlessly connect DHL’s customers in Singapore to the region and worldwide, ensuring that they continue to enjoy DHL’s best-in-class products and service offerings as a trade facilitator.

Like all DHL Express facilities in Singapore, the eXpo Service Centre has obtained a Transported Asset Protection Association (TAPA) Class A certification.

The eXpo Service Centre is also monitored by the Quality Control Center (QCC) that serves as a nerve center for crisis management in Singapore. Operating 24/7, the DHL QCCs are a network of regional and country quality control centers that proactively monitor all DHL shipments in the air and on the ground round-the-clock.

New Royal Mail strike announced

Royal Mail workers will stage a second 24-hour walkout over pay and jobs, their union has said. The strike will begin at 1900 BST on 12 July and will end the following day, the Communication Workers’ Union said.

Last Friday, the CWU led a similar walkout across the UK – the first national postal strike in a decade.

Workers are angry over plans to restructure the company, though Royal Mail argues it has to change in order to compete with rival firms.

Staff has rejected a 2.5% pay offer and says they are worried that modernization plans will see jobs cut.

Deputy General Secretary of the CWU, Dave Ward, said that the strike could be averted if Royal Mail entered negotiations.

Last week’s post strike was the first national walkout in a decade

Royal Mail and the CWU disagreed over how successful last Friday’s strike had been.

The union dismissed as “nonsense” Royal Mail claims that nationally up to 60% of its staff were working, saying that 95% of staff took part in industrial action.

The CWU has argued that Royal Mail’s plans for modernization will lead to 40,000 job losses.

But Royal Mail has said it needs to change the way it operates after the UK’s postal market was opened up to competition.

And earlier this year, Royal Mail was ditched by the Department for Work and Pensions in favor of UK Mail.

Companies are unhappy at the prospect of disruption to services, and the Federation of Small Businesses has warned that further strikes would put the livelihoods and jobs of many people in small firms “at risk”.

The two runways have a separation distance of 2,120 metres, enabling them to be used independently. Like the North Runway, the South Runway has a Category IIIb All-Weather Landing System for both approach directions.
Adjoining the South Runway is a 53 hectare apron for cargo aircraft, which was also part of the expansion project and which will be used by Deutsche Post World Net express subsidiary DHL from this autumn.

The airport shareholders have invested approximately EUR 290 million in the new South Runway, including taxiways.

Another EUR 60 million has been spent on compliance, including extensive noise and environmental protection measures and land acquisition
