Crown Post Office branches – strike update

More than 99.8 pct of the Post Office network -around 14,190 branches – was serving customers this morning although strike action led to the closure of 25 Crown branches until 12noon.

Most of the 14,220-strong network is run as private businesses by subpostmasters or by retailers under franchise agreements but the CWU had called strike action in the 458 Crown branches where the Post Office directly employs the counter staffs who work there.

However, half the counter staff turned up for works this morning and together with management volunteers, just 25 of the 458 Crown branches were not open for business until lunchtime.

The Crown network – which includes the largest branches in high streets and shopping centers – is losing around GBP 70 million a year on its operations, which is unsustainable long-term.

Meanwhile, postmen and women in Royal Mail’s letters business were at work today delivering, collecting, sort and transporting mail.

DHL expands in Columbus, Ohio

DHL announced the opening of a new service center facility to meet the growing needs of customers in Columbus, Ohio and surrounding communities. DHL has invested USD 2.1 million in the state-of-the-art service center facility which serves local package pickup and delivery operations in the area.

The new, 54,000-sq.-ft. service center combines a 5,500-sq-ft facility 45 miles east of Columbus and a 20,000-sq.-ft facility near Port Columbus International Airport into one larger operation. Shipments that flow in and out of the new service center are routed directly through DHL’s principal air and ground hub in Wilmington, Ohio – one hour by road from Columbus.

The new facility was built to allow individual letters and packages to flow directly onto and off of vehicles from a conveyor belt system. This new “loose-load” operation will enable greater operational efficiencies, leading to quicker loading and unloading of freight, increased capacity on line-haul vehicles, earlier deliveries and expanded pickup cutoff times for customers in the area.

The new service center will serve package pickup and delivery operations for Columbus, Ohio and surrounding towns, including Mt. Vernon (North), Piketon (South), and Bethesda (East). The facility will handle a wide variety of shipments – including domestic and international parcels as well as palletized, loose-load and container freight.

DHL will continue to maintain its 50,000-sq.-ft service center facility located in the western part of Columbus at 2250 International Street.

UK strike hits postal services

Some main post offices could be closed on Monday as the Royal Mail is hit by a fresh strike in a row over transferring services to WH Smith stores.

Hundreds of members of the Communication Workers Union took industrial action from 6am to midday in protest at plans to close 85 so-called Crown post offices and move their services to the high street retailer.

Workers at the UK’s 465 Crown Offices staged a similar walkout on Friday as part of the national postal strike, which crippled deliveries.

The union regards the WH Smith move as privatization and has warned that 1,500 jobs will be axed and workers who remain will suffer pay and pensions cuts worth thousands of pounds.

The union said it expected Monday’s strike to lead to Crown post offices being closed or badly disrupted until lunchtime.

The CWU warned there will be further strikes unless the Post Office returned to negotiations with an improved offer on pay and job security.

The postal organization said managers will be drafted in to work in affected offices, while the 13,800 sub post offices are not involved in the dispute and will all be open as normal.

TNT Post acquires stake in Nordwest-Mail GmbH (CITIPOST Bremen)

TNT Post is expanding its household coverage in Germany by acquiring a 25.1 percent stake in regional mail delivery company Nordwest-Mail GmbH in Bremen (CITIPOST Bremen). This stake in CITIPOST will guarantee TNT Post access to more than 400,000 households in the Greater Bremen Area, as well as to the complete network of the CITIPOST alliance, the largest alternative mail delivery service in north-west Germany. Under the name “CITIPOST”, the Nordwest-Mail GmbH has been a regional mail delivery enterprise in the Greater Bremen Area since 2005.

For its part, CITIPOST Bremen is benefiting from the strategic partnership by gaining access to TNT Post’s nationwide and international networks and will now be able to offer its business clients an even broader range of mail delivery services.

Nordwest-Mail GmbH is an affiliate of the Bremer Tageszeitungen AG. By securing a holding in Nordwest-Mail GmbH, TNT Post is establishing a partnership with yet another German publishing house. Frusch explains: “A number of newspaper publishers operate its own mail delivery companies in the regional mail delivery sector, thus making optimal use of their efficient, long-established structures for newspaper distribution. Setting up joint ventures and cooperative projects with publishing firms is a pivotal element in our network development strategy.” Recently TNT Post announced a strategic partnership with the Ippen Publishing Group and Süddeutscher Verlag.

The holding in Nordwest-Mail GmbH is subject to approval by the antitrust authorities.

Adrexo and Altadis to develop a network of parcel collection points in France

Adrexo, the first licensed mail competitor to La Poste, is setting up a B2C parcels service to take on the French post office’s ColiPoste subsidiary and other parcel companies in the fast-growing market segment. It is also developing its postal delivery services.

Adrexo has signed a deal with the French-Spanish tobacco group Altadis to develop a network of parcel collection points through the latter’s nationwide network of tobacconist kiosks and stores, the Les Echos business newspaper reported last Tuesday.

The new service will start in January 2008 with two important launch customers, cosmetics group Yves Rocher and mail-order retailer Quelle France, the newspaper said. Quelle previously used ColiPoste for home delivery and Kiala’s Point Relais network for parcel drop-offs at retail outlets, according to information on its website.

Adrexo, a subsidiary of Ouest France, with a turnover of 600 million euros. Adrexo is a major player in unaddressed mail, and entered the addressed mail market in 2004. It claims to reach 95% of letterboxes in France.
