Hermes Logistik – Mondial Relay partnership

German parcels company, Hermes Logistik, has further strengthened its growing European network by forming a partnership with France’s Mondial Relay for deliveries and collections in France, Germany and Austria.

Home delivery specialist Mondial says it will also be expanding its consumer service through Relai pick-up points in four new countries – Belgium, Luxembourg, Portugal and Spain – and hopes to have opened over 20,000 such points in the seven countries (including France) by the end of this year.

The expansion will see Mondial’s parcels volumes grow by about 20% in two years from the 34 million handled in 2006, the company said in a release.

The network is designed to cash in on the Internet home delivery boom in major markets such as Germany, France and the UK. Parcelnet, the UK home delivery company owned by the Otto Group, announced two months ago that it also was expanding by buying the Redcats courier network in the UK.

Hermes, which grew by 11.5% in 2006, is moving into the Austrian market this summer. It now has 13,500 distribution points in Germany and a further 1,200 lined up for Austria.

A Portable Post Office For Marlow

A Portable building in a car park could be a temporary solution to the loss of Marlow’s High Street post office, the town council says.

The proposal would mean the loss of six car parking spaces, but councillors say it is a necessary measure while the High Street branch remains closed.

The branch shut in April forcing customers to travel all the way to High Wycombe or Maidenhead for the nearest full-service post office.

The latest proposal was revealed at Marlow Town Council’s Finance Services Committee meeting on Wednesday.

Howard Bellairs, council clerk, said the portable building idea had been initially refused by Wycombe District Council after an approach was made by Post Office Ltd. But he insisted it was the best way forward and that pressure from the town council could change the situation.

He said: “I think Post Office Ltd, when they got in touch with Wycombe were dismissed by an officer acting in good faith on the grounds that there was problems with parking spaces.

Communications Workers' Union says 1,000 postal jobs underthreat from liberalisation plans

Up to 1,000 jobs in Ireland could be lost if European Commission proposals to liberalise the postal market throughout Europe are implements by 2009 as planned, the Communications Workers’ Union (CWU) has claimed.

More than 80 main post offices around the State were closed for an hour at lunchtime yesterday as part of a protest by the group of unions at An Post against the commission’s plans. Similar actions took place throughout Europe.

In a statement last night, the Department of Communications said the Government supported liberalisation of the postal network.

Seán McDonagh, CWU national officer, said that the introduction of the current proposals, without any safeguards, “would lead to the destruction of the universal services obligation which ensures all citizens get daily deliveries at a uniform price”.

“The commission directive in its current format would remove all protections from traditional postal operators by January 1st, 2009, but makes no provision for funding to secure a universal postal service at an affordable price to all customers wherever they live,” he said.

The trade unions at An Post fear that private operators entering the market would “cherry pick” lucrative delivery areas, leaving the company to deal with less profitable routes.

“If somebody can deliver mail just in Dublin 4 where it is highly profitable and easy to do, that is unfair competition, particularly if they do not have an obligation to deliver anywhere else,” Mr McDonagh said.

He estimated that up to 1,000 jobs could be lost in Ireland if the market liberalisation plans went ahead and that in addition conditions of employment at An Post would be eroded.

Germany: Postal Directive makes good progress

Concerning the results of today’s talks on the proposed amended Postal Directive by the Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council in Luxembourg, Michael Glos, Federal Minister of Economics and Technology said: “Clear progress is discernable on the path towards the liberalisation of the European postal services. No Member Statequestions liberalisation as such. The train is moving towards liberalisation. However, the Member States have different ideas about how fast it should move.”

It will also still be necessary to clarify how the costs of universal service provision are to be calculated and the financing instruments managed.

Federal Minister Glos reported to the Ministers competent for the postal sector on the consensus reached under the German Presidency of the European Council on a large number of points of the Commission’s draft for amendments to the Postal Directive.
