Belgian Post to close 277 offices 2007

Belgian postal services company De Post/La Poste will close 277 offices in 2007 as part of its restructuring plan, Belgian daily De Standaard said on November 22, 2006.

De Post hopes to compensate the closure of offices in its loss-making postal network with the opening of 189 PostPunten sales counters at banks, supermarkets and news stand in 2007.

The company currently has 136 PostPunten counters. It plans to operate 1,300 offices and counters in 2007, but to reduce substantially the number of post offices to 650 from 1,249 by 2009.

De Post/La Poste will shut down the first 99 offices in February 2007, according to Lieve Van Overbeke, representative of the ACV trade union. The closures will affect 219 employees.

Pricing in proportion research

Postwatch, the watchdog for postal services, today releases research on Pricing in Proportion (PiP), Royal Mail’s new pricing structure.

The key findings are:

” 84 per cent of those interviewed were aware of PiP,

” 87 per cent of vulnerable customers (the elderly, rural dwellers and those on low income) believe they are paying more for their post following PiP’s introduction.

” 12 per cent of over 1000 items posted were charged incorrect postage;

Commenting on the research, Millie Banerjee CBE, Chair of Postwatch, said:

“Our research shows that Royal Mail’s huge effort to raise awareness and understanding of PiP has been successful but is potentially being undermined by some post offices failing to advise and charge customers correctly.

Express counter proposal for rural post office survival

Britain’s leading business-to-business express delivery company has dropped an idea into the debate surrounding the potential survival of hundreds, possibly thousands, of rural post offices.

TNT Express Services UK & Ireland is proposing that village post offices broaden their range of services to act as a ‘drop-off point’ for all parcel companies where packages cannot be delivered because the intended residential recipients are unavailable. Currently, only Royal Mail and Parcelforce have access to the network of rural post offices.

Nigel Barton, Director of Operations for TNT Express Services, said the idea would provide multiple benefits for both rural postmasters, delivery companies, customers and the environment.

“At a time when the very existence of rural post offices is in question this would provide them with a source of supplementary revenue, increase the efficiency levels of delivery companies, provide convenient access for the collection of parcels and packages and reduce the number of vehicle movements required to try and re-deliver goods.”

The enlightened initiative comes at a time when the Government is considering a drastic reduction in the GBP150 million-a-year subsidy given to help support the rural post office network
