FedEx Express to increase net average shipping rates 4.9 percent in 2008

FedEx Corp. will increase the net average shipping rate for FedEx Express by 4.9 percent, which is composed of a 6.9 percent increase in standard list rates, offset by a 2.0 percent reduction in the fuel surcharge. The new rates will be effective Jan. 7, 2008 and apply to U.S. and U.S. export express package and freight shipments.

Rates and surcharges for FedEx Ground also will increase for 2008. These changes will be announced later this year.

New in 2008, FedEx Express customers importing goods to the U.S. will pay U.S. dollar rates. This provides a consolidated set of U.S. import rates to U.S. customers allowing them to avoid uncertainties caused by currency fluctuations. Increases in rates for shipments inbound to the U.S. from certain international locations will also be effective Jan. 7, 2008.

“FedEx continues to provide market leading express services,” said T. Michael Glenn, FedEx executive vice president, Market Development and Corporate Communications. “These rate adjustments will allow FedEx to continue making the necessary investments in our business so we can continue to give our customers a superior shipping experience.”

FedEx adds new flights between Memphis (US) and Manchester (UK)

FedEx Express, the cargo airline of FedEx Corp., is launching new direct flights between its headquarters in Memphis and Manchester, England.

An MD-11 flight originating at the shipping giant’s hub in Paris will stop in Manchester each day Monday to Thursday before flying to Tennessee.

The flights will increase the company’s daily capacity between the U.S. and U.K. by up to 50 percent and between Europe and the U.S. by 20 percent, FedEx announced Tuesday.

“Manchester is the fastest-growing region in the U.K., which has led to increased market demand for reliable, time-definite express transportation services,” said Robert W. Elliott, president, FedEx Express, Europe, Middle East, Indian subcontinent and Africa.

The airline already operates two express freighters from Stansted in southeastern England to Newark, New Jersey, and Memphis. The new flight is expected to increase next-day service and allow later pickup times for northern Britain.

FedEx speeds up Macau delivery times

FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corp, today announced that its delivery commitment time has been advanced by five hours, to 1 pm, for all of its International Priority and International Economy shipments from anywhere in the world to Macau.

Backed by a money-back guarantee, this enhancement enables FedEx to offer the earliest delivery time each business day in Macau of any express delivery company.

Customers, who rely on time-definite delivery of products with short lifecycles, such as information-related items or other high-value goods, will benefit significantly from this development.

In 2006, the value of imports into Macau reached USD 4.6 billion, 45.1 percent of this originating in mainland China, with the WPRD region accounting for the biggest amount.

Re-exports increased by 10.3 percent to USD 771 million. Re-exports to mainland China, which accounted for 45.7 percent of the total re-exports, grew by 2.2 percent in 2006.

Strengthened by the establishment of the Zhuhai Free Trade Zone, the Hengqin and Lotus Bridge customs facilities and the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement, cross-border activity is expected to gain further momentum.

Meanwhile, the new hotels and resorts with world-class convention and exhibition facilities that will open in Macau represent another pool of demand for international express services.

FedEx Express to acquire Flying-Cargo in Hungary

FedEx Corp. announced today that its FedEx Express unit signed an agreement to acquire its Hungarian global service participant, Flying-Cargo Hungary Kft. The transaction, which is the latest step in the company’s Eastern Europe expansion strategy, will give FedEx a wholly-owned operation in one of the region’s dynamic markets.

Flying-Cargo, a privately-held company, has been the FedEx global service participant in Hungary since 2003 and has a proven track record of providing high-quality service. All of Flying-Cargo’s day-to-day operations are expected to remain unchanged for the foreseeable future, and the company will function as a wholly-owned business of FedEx Express.

“Since the mid 1990’s, Hungary has proven to be one of the standout economies in Eastern Europe, with import and export growth rates of up to 7% projected until 2009,” said Robert W. Elliott, president of FedEx Express, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Indian subcontinent.

FedEx has expanded its network throughout Eastern Europe by introducing a series of new flights and country offerings over the past three years. Michael L. Ducker, president of FedEx Express International added that “Central and Eastern Europe, which is growing at nearly three times that of Western Europe, presents significant opportunities for our customers.”
