FedEx Kinko’s to Introduce Locations in McCormick Place

FedEx Kinko’s and the Metropolitan Pier and Exhibition Authority (MPEA) today announced plans to open five office and print centers in the McCormick Place convention center and historic Navy Pier in Chicago. Detailed plans provide for four locations to open within the convention center facility and one in Navy Pier later this fall.

The presence of FedEx Kinko’s in McCormick Place will provide the convention center’s nearly three million annual visitors with convenient access to high-quality office, printing and shipping services all in one place, without leaving the facility. In addition, customers anywhere in the world may submit orders online for production at the new FedEx Kinko’s locations, saving the hassle of traveling with hefty materials and presentations.

The new FedEx Kinko’s centers will be located in the North, South, and West Buildings and Lakeside Center (formerly the East Building). Similar to stand-alone FedEx Kinko’s Office and Print Centers, these locations will offer copying and digital printing services, sign and banner production, FedEx Express and FedEx Ground shipping options, and more.

FedEx Kinko’s escalates expansion efforts

FedEx Kinko’s, an operating company of FedEx Corp today officially announced an aggressive expansion plan to open 300 new office and print centers in the United States throughout fiscal 2008. The company also will redesign 110 existing centers and introduce 20 new locations internationally. These changes are part of the company’s overall plan to provide small businesses and traveling professionals with even greater access to the company’s office and print services and the FedEx transportation network.

FedEx Kinko’s has more than 1,700 locations in operation today, and this latest push for growth comes on the heels of the successful execution of its expansion plan in fiscal 2007. Last August, the company introduced a smaller store format and announced plans to open 200 centers nationwide with the new design. These centers have an average footprint of 1,800 square feet and carry more than 700 different office products. In addition, they offer the same services as a traditional center and have generated positive customer feedback since the launch. Based on the strong results, the 300 domestic locations scheduled to open in fiscal 2008 will feature the small-format design as well.

FedEx Kinko’s also plans to embark on its most aggressive international expansion effort to date by opening 20 new centers outside the United States during fiscal 2008. These new centers will be focused in the Asia-Pacific region with 12 in China, four in Japan, two in Korea, and one in Australia. In addition, one new center will be opened in Canada. Currently, the company has 159 locations outside the United States.

Adobe to drop FedEx Kinko's link

After a wave of criticism from printing companies and others, Adobe Systems Inc. said Wednesday it will remove a link on new software to FedEx Kinko’s.

San Jose, Calif.-based Adobe said its Reader and Acrobat software scheduled to be released in October won’t have the link.

The prominent button was introduced in June, enabling electronic transfer of documents directly for printing at FedEx Kinko’s stores. It was criticized by Kinko’s competitors who feared it would hurt them.

Adobe said it didn’t expect material revenue from the link, so it “will have little to no impact on Adobe’s financial results.”

A version of Adobe Reader will still be available from the FedEx Kinko’s Web site that contains the link.

UPS Store owners are angry – Franchisees file a complaint, saying the business model keeps them in the red

More than 200 owners of UPS Stores across the country have filed a complaint against UPS and its franchiser, Mail Boxes Etc.

The franchise owners said in a filing in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles that they haven’t been able to make money because UPS undermined them by using the branded stores as drop-off points for prepaid packages and forcing the owners to focus on providing document and printing services.

“For a large group of us, it has been very difficult to make this work,” said Larry Bowdoin, the Alabama-based president of the Brown Shield Association, a group of UPS Store franchise owners. “Who would’ve thought that UPS would’ve created this franchise and wanted to see it do anything except succeed?”

The complaint, filed in April, claims the business model of the UPS Stores has been disastrous to franchisees’ bottom lines.

UPS bought Mail Boxes Etc. in 2001, and many franchises converted to UPS Stores about two years later.
