FedEx Kinko's partners with Adobe

FedEx Kinko’s and Adobe Systems Inc. Wednesday announced a partnership to extend the reach of Kinko’s online applications.

With connections to Adobe’s Reader and Acrobat software, Kinko’s Print Online customers will be able to send documents for printing to any Kinko’s store in the country.

“By enabling FedEx Kinko’s Print Online functionality with Adobe Reader and Acrobat, people can simply and conveniently access FedEx Kinko’s printing services, which provides more options for working with PDF files — including professional printing and shipping via FedEx, right from the desktop,” said John Brennan, senior vice president of the Platform Business Unit at Adobe.

The free Adobe Reader 8.1 has a “Send to FedEx Kinko’s” option in the file menu as well as a button on the main toolbar, represented by the Kinko’s icon. Later this month, Acrobat 8.1 will also feature the FedEx Kinko’s functionality as an option in the file menu.

With Kinko’s Print Online, customers may upload and combine multiple files, customize jobs with tabs and inserts, preview orders, track job status, choose to ship their orders or pick up at a local center, and pay online.

A variety of delivery options are available, including FedEx Express and FedEx Ground services. Users may store contact and billing information, reprint previous orders, review order history, receive discounts and special offers, set up preferences for a favorite center location and default recipient information.

FedEx and Kinko's meet

Kinko’s has long been known for making things larger or smaller; FedEx for delivering — so it’s not a surprise that FedEx Kinko’s has opened a store to enlarge its services from less space.

FedEx Kinko’s aims to provide more services and products in a smaller space with its redesigned stores, one of which opened May 7 on Atlanta Highway.

Pearlie Cross, who manages the new store, has worked for FedEx since 1996. She said the Kinko’s part of the chain, once centered on college campuses, has changed its focus.

The new format debuted nationally late last summer with expectations of opening 200 stores by the end of this month.

Cross said the store carries about 700 items, including paper, writing instruments and digital storage media.

The expanded retail presence complements traditional services offered by FedEx and Kinko’s, she said.

Kinko’s has grown to more than a self-service copy center for college students scrambling to finish a term paper at some wee hour of the morning.

FedEx Kinko’s offers document services including finishing and presentation, Web-based printing and document management.

Growth strategy based on mini-centers

The national chain believes the way to grow is by shrinking the size of its stores, and by planting these new mini-centers in many more locations in North Jersey and around the country.

The office services and shipping retailer is aggressively seeking 1,800-square-foot storefronts in new strip centers in North Jersey as part of a plan to place locations closer to its small-business customers. The new stores are roughly one-third the size of existing FedEx Kinko’s stores, and far smaller than the 8,400-square-foot store in Paramus.

The first of this new breed of FedEx Kinko’s stores arrived in North Jersey last month, at 120 Route 17 north in East Rutherford.

The company is preparing to open similar stores in Roseland and Rockaway next month. FedEx Kinko’s is seeking to open five to six more locations in Bergen County, said Jeff Lagowitz, a partner in Fort Lee-based Metro Commercial, the real estate firm that is FedEx Kinko’s exclusive representative in North Jersey.
