Wal-Mart ends merchandise flight with DHL (U.S)

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. ended its agreement to have DHL fly Wal-Mart merchandise nightly from Fayetteville, Ark., shortly after DHL’s May 28 announcement that it intended to hire United Parcel Service for its U.S. cargo airlift work, according to a pilot who flew the route for ASTAR Air Cargo, a DHL contractor.
The flights typically carried 40,000 pounds of jewelry each night for Wal-Mart, Pebler said.
Wal-Mart quit using DHL for the flight from Fayetteville, where it has a jewelry distribution and repair center, because DHL had changed its flight route patterns in ways that didn’t serve all the locations Wal-Mart has, said Dan Fogleman, a spokesman for the retailer. Fayetteville, about 30 miles from Wal-Mart’s corporate office in Bentonville, Ark., was among the areas affected by the DHL route changes, Fogleman said.
Fogleman declined to say how much additional business Wal-Mart does with DHL, or whether the retailer has shifted any of its shipping business to DHL competitors UPS or Federal Express.
DHL declined to discuss its business with Wal-Mart.

FedEx Ground names Entrepreneurs of the Year (USA)

FedEx Ground recognized three small business owners with one of the company’s highest honors for independent contractors. Keith Herzig of Hartford, Conn., Sunil K. Patel of Philadelphia and Raymond Skiptunis of Trenton, N.J., were named FedEx Ground Entrepreneurs of the Year at a banquet recognizing them for their business development, customer service results, safety record, and community support.
The FedEx Ground Entrepreneur of the Year honor was established in 2007 to pay tribute to those independent contractors who have built businesses that most consistently go the extra mile to safely deliver superior customer service, help fellow independent contractors succeed, and support their local communities. Of the more than 13,000 independent contractors supporting the FedEx Ground network, Herzig, Patel and Skiptunis were recognized for best exemplifying these traits in 2007-2008.
Since the founding of the Entrepreneur of the Year program, FedEx Ground has named 140 regional honorees. Herzig, Patel and Skiptunis were selected from a group of 20 finalists from this year’s regional winners.

UPS looks to China for M&A

United Parcel Service hopes to buy a firm in China and boost staff there in coming years.

UPS, a bellwether of the U.S. economy along with rival FedEx Corp, last month posted earnings in line with expectations but hit by rising fuel costs and a weak economy.

Trying to drive growth beyond a U.S. market that accounts for more than half its revenue, UPS will be opening two USD 180 million transport hubs in China and wants to nearly quadruple its staffing there in the next few years, hoping to serve growing demand for delivery services within a relatively untapped market.

“U.S. consumers are not buying, but I think the great opportunity for us internationally is business that never touches U.S. shores,” Dan Brutto, the president of the company’s international business, told Reuters in an interview on Monday.

UPS has doubled its headcount in China over the past 18 months to around 5,300, but expects that number to increase by at least 1,000 annually over the next 3-4 years, said Brutto.

It’s now looking for acquisitions within the world’s fourth largest economy, despite fears that Chinese growth will taper off over 2008 and 2009.

“You could say UPS China should really have 25,000 employees. The business is out there,” Brutto said.

FedEx supports growth in South West UK with new international and domestic facility

FedEx UK announced the launch of a new facility in Exeter to meet the growing demands of business in the region.

The facility, located in the Greendale Business Park, Woodbury Salterton, has doubled capacity in the South West and reduces delivery times by up to one and a half hours. The station, which processes packages going to and from customers, will handle both packages for FedEx UK domestic, and FedEx Express International customers.

The depot, which is located five miles from Exeter City Centre and three miles from Exeter International Airport, has the capacity to sort 500 packages per hour along a 70-metre conveyor belt system designed to allow the fast processing of parcels.

The 17,000 sq ft facility was also specially adapted to allow vehicles to load from any of the 13 double-shutter doors at the front and side of the building – freeing warehouse space inside the depot for peak periods and annual growth.
