Mexican express market hit by weaker demand

The Mexican express market is starting to experience the impact of falling US demand and rising prices driven by higher fuel surcharges, according to a recent newspaper report. DHL is meanwhile pledging further investment in Argentina.

In Mexico, which has strong trade links with the USA, air cargo volumes dropped by 12.9 pct in the first quarter of 2008, the Reforma newspaper reported. Mexican airlines saw a 33.8 pct fall in their domestic volumes, although their international shipments rose by 18.4 pct, it said, citing figures from the Mexican civil aviation authority.

International airlines, including FedEx and UPS, suffered a combined 15.4 pct declines in volumes, it added. FedEx suffered a 73 pct decline in Mexico volumes while UPS had a 9.1 pct drop, according to official figures.

Customers started to switch business away from air transport rather than pay higher prices resulting from the rapid increase in fuel surcharges, the newspaper said. It cited UPS manager Miguel Trejo as saying that the situation was “stable” until now. But he added: “There are certain reductions in the growth expectations, however, and we are staying alert to market behaviour.”

In Argentina, in contrast, DHL Express has announced that it is maintaining its leadership of the international express market, with market shares of about 50 pct for express exports and 30 pct for imports.

Roger Crook, CEO DHL Express, International Americas, said on a recent visit to Buenos Aires that DHL would continue to invest in the market to offer customers the best possible service and a wide range of products. DHL Argentina has six operational centres linking the major cities, and operates with 90 vehicles, which it described as 30 pct more than the combined vehicle fleets of other international express operators.

FedEx Celebrates Domestic Service One-Year Anniversary

As part of the one-year anniversary of its domestic service launch in China, FedEx Express (FedEx) announced its latest domestic service enhancements in China.

FedEx domestic service now offers an earlier next-morning delivery to nine major cities: Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou, Kunshan, Wuxi, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Guangzhou, and Ningbo. Packages will now reach their destination by 10:30 a.m., Monday – Saturday, all with the FedEx money-back guarantee.

Customers within the Yangtze River Delta (Shanghai, Suzhou, Kunshan, Wuxi, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Ningbo) and the Pearl River Delta (Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Foshan, Zhuhai, Huizhou and Jiangmen) will be offered later cut-off times for intra-region shipments. The cut-off time in those cities will be extended to 9 p.m.

Since FedEx began domestic time-definite service in China last year, it has continued to invest in local infrastructure and expand its services and coverage. Through its domestic hub at Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport and the partnership with Okay Airways, FedEx successfully introduced its unique hub-and-spoke system to China. After one year of operation, the next-morning delivery service has expanded from 19 cities to more than 40 cities, while the second-day delivery service reaches customers in more than 200 cities throughout the country.

To keep pace with China’s rapidly changing market, FedEx has constantly upgraded its domestic services in China. Last September, a string of service enhancements were introduced, and last December, FedEx equipped the domestic service couriers in 20 cities with the latest GPRS Trackers, which provide real-time information about the location and status of customer’s packages.

FedEx Express Earns FAA Certification for Innovative Flight Safety System

FedEx Express has achieved a milestone in innovative flight safety technology with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification of a new aircraft avionic system that dramatically improves situational awareness for pilots during takeoff and landing—the most critical part of any flight.

FedEx Express is the first major commercial carrier in the airline industry to receive a Supplemental Type Certificate from the FAA for the advanced system, authorizing its installation in the company’s fleet of Boeing MD-10 freighters. The company’s goal for the system is to improve the level of flight safety by increasing visibility of pilots during adverse weather conditions and darkness.

Upon activation of the system, pilots can significantly enhance visibility in poor weather —including darkness, smoke, smog, haze and other weather events—while simultaneously seeing critical flight data. This allows the captain to maintain a heads-up view of his surroundings, eliminating transition time normally needed to look down at cockpit primary flight information. The visual enhancement is similar to that created by infrared night-vision technology used in modern-day defense systems.

A unique application of Honeywell International “Head Up Display” (HUD) technology combined with infrared “Enhanced Flight Vision System” (EFVS) technology of Elbit Systems of America Commercial Aviation-Kollsman Business Unit, positions the system as the leader in the avionic visual technologies market.
