FedEx Express supports European trade growth with hub expansions in France and Germany

FedEx Express has announced two major European hub projects to meet the growing demands of European business—a major expansion to its European hub in Roissy-Charles de Gaulle, Paris, and a state-of-the-art environmentally friendly facility in Cologne.

The expansion at Roissy-Charles de Gaulle by September 2009 and the building of a major new facility at Cologne by spring 2010 will dramatically increase capacity at the two hubs—ensuring that FedEx Express can continue to provide a seamless service for customers who wish to access European and global markets while minimizing impact on the environment.

The European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs stated that in 2007 the European zone recorded its fastest economic growth rate since 2000, and that Europe was sharing in the benefits of the trend towards greater globalization. As manufacturers continue to move towards a global sourcing and production model, the demand for fast and reliable transportation services is increasing, and critical to the growth and success of European industry.

European trade performance brings greater business opportunities both within Europe, and in the global marketplace. FedEx continues to build its network across Europe to support this growth, with sustainable development of its hub facilities across the continent.

The relocation of FedEx Express main hub for Central and Eastern Europe from Frankfurt to Cologne will allow FedEx Express to create a state-of-the-art facility with the very latest environmental design to meet the rapidly growing demand for express services in Germany and Eastern Europe. As FedEx continues limited operations at the Frankfurt International Airport, the new facility will bring new jobs to the Cologne/Bonn region and further improve working conditions for employees.

USPS exclusive carrier of packages to the last-mile for DHL

The U.S. Postal Service said that the international delivery company DHL will leverage an existing agreement to give the Postal Service exclusive delivery services to the last-mile in certain locations. The expanded agreement will build on the existing arrangement through a combination of the Postal Service’s Priority Mail and Parcel Select products.
Since 2003, the Postal Service has provided last-mile delivery for DHL in over 20,000 ZIP Codes nationwide through its Parcel Select service. This expansion makes USPS the exclusive provider of delivery service to DHL for 3,600 of the nation’s 46,000 ZIP Codes through use of Priority Mail and Parcel Select service.

USPS targets large shippers

USPS is expected to announce a slate of large express freight contracts in August after being allowed to bid for commercial contracts for the first time.

Earlier this month, USPS was allowed for the first time to offer tailored contracts to customers, having been almost frozen out of the commercial market.

Previously, the company had to offer flat-rate pricing to all customers. “In express, it was extremely limiting,” said Gary Reblin, vice president for expedited mail at USPS. “We realized we were behind the eight-ball.”

Reblin said in an interview that USPS is bulking up its sales force to target niche markets such as small businesses and the retail returns sector, focusing on smaller packages.
USPS said it had an advantage over rivals by leveraging its existing mail and package delivery infrastructure.

He said a number of larger shippers were starting to commit to its service, and the company plans to announce a number of three-year contracts later in the summer.
USPS differs from existing operators in offering flat-price deals with annual increases, avoiding the fuel surcharges that shippers said were becoming an increasingly important part of contract negotiations.

The company has a market share of around 30 pct in the U.S. air express market – ranking first above FedEx – but only 4.3 pct of the expedited segment for next-day and two-day delivery.

Reblin said it aimed to grow its share of the expedited market, but declined to provide targets.

DHL sign air freight agreement with USPS and FedEx

DHL signed a major ground and air freight agreement with the United States Postal Service and its principal air express operator, FedEx.

Deutsche Post World Net plans to announce details of the agreement via webcast from Bonn.

The agreement calls for FedEx to carry some air and ground freight on behalf of the USPS. Sources familiar with the agreement said FedEx will takeover those unprofitable air routes initially and increase the service gradually.

DPWN Chief Executive Officer Frank Appel is also expected to announce the closing of a quarter of DHL’s U.S. stations and the elimination of hundreds of jobs. DHL is expected to redirect its growth efforts on its international service.

FedEx and DHL declined to comment and the USPS was non-committal about the venture.

In January 2001, FedEx and the Postal Service announced two major agreements. One called for FedEx Express to provide airport-to-airport movement of containers holding around 3.5 million pounds of Priority Mail, Express Mail and First Class Mail. The other part of the agreement involved the drop off of packages at FedEx Drop Boxes nationwide. At that time, the venture was expected to generate approximately $1 billion a year for FedEx.

The USPS declined to say how much it pays FedEx annually.

Among the company’s many efforts to drive US exports, FedEx operates an initiative with the US Commercial Service aimed at boosting exports from US businesses.
