The company cited La Hulpe’s central location in Europe, the retention of its Belgian employees, access to international and public transportation connections, and a commercially zoned site set in natural surroundings as factors in the site location decision, said Robert W. Elliott, president of FedEx Express, Europe, Middle East, Indian subcontinent and Africa.

FedEx Ground chooses Perrysburg, Ohio, site for new distribution hub

As part of a multi-billion dollar network expansion plan to nearly double average daily hub package volume capacity in North America, FedEx Ground, an operating unit of FedEx Corp., has chosen a 127-acre site in Perrysburg Township,Ohio, as the location for a new hub to replace its existing Toledo operation.

Total cost for the project is estimated to be USD 87 million, including land, construction and material-handling equipment. Once the hub is operating, FedEx Ground, through payments for property taxes, will be one of the largest contributors to the local Rossford City Schools annual budget.

The 400,000 square-foot facility will be built on Buck Road near the I-75 interchange. When it opens in 2009, the new hub will feature the latest automated material handling technology designed to initially process 22,500 packages per hour and 45,000 packages per hour when it eventually reaches full capacity after a projected expansion. The current workforce of nearly 550 employees and independent contractors is projected to eventually increase to more than 800.

Enhancing our distribution capability in the Midwest is an important step in our ongoing efforts to increase the size, speed and efficiency of our network, said Michael P. Mannion, senior vice president of Operations for FedEx Ground. This new facility will help us meet the growing demand of local shippers and serve as one of just two gateways for shipments destined to Canada.

FedEx warns over slowdown

Fred Smith, the chief executive of FedEx, the logistics giant, has warned that global growth will not be enough to counter a US slowdown, raising doubts over corporate America’s ability to export its way out of a sluggish domestic economy.

The warning from Mr Smith, a respected business leader whose company is both a gauge and a beneficiary of globalisation, will deepen investor pessimism over the prospect that the world economy could “decouple” and survive a US downturn unscathed.

In an interview with the Financial Times in which he also indicated he would like his successor to come from within FedEx, Mr Smith dismissed suggestions that the rapid pace of economic development in emerging markets would offset a US slowdown.

“Growth elsewhere helps cushion the shock but nothing can displace a slowdown in the US,” he said. “I don’t care how optimistic people are about China or anything else, [the US] is still 25 per cent of the world’s economic activity so when it slows down it is going to have an effect.”

Three weeks ago, FedEx issued the second profit warning in a month, citing flagging demand for US freight and escalating fuel costs. The announcement confounded investors’ predictions that a weak dollar and resilient economies in the rest of the world could help multinationals buck a domestic downturn.
