American Red Cross and FedEx announce collaboration to help small businesses

A national survey of small businesses conducted by the American Red Cross and FedEx Corp. found that while 94 percent of small business owners believe there is a potential for a disaster to seriously disrupt their business within the next two years, only 43 percent feel prepared for a one week disruption of their business, and 22 percent feel prepared for a one month disruption. Importantly, many businesses do want to become better prepared, with almost a quarter of respondents indicating they are planning on taking steps to prepare their businesses for disaster.

Based on these findings, the American Red Cross and FedEx Corp. will create tools to help small businesses get prepared.

FedEx and the Red Cross have been working together to examine small business disaster preparedness because of the important role small businesses play in the national and global economy, as well as the safety and strength of the communities in which they are located.

Having responded to more than 75,000 disasters nationwide last year, we have seen first hand how businesses with trained employees, protected resources and plans for operational continuity can decrease the physical and financial impact of a disaster, and lessen the burden on first responders, said Darlene Sparks Washington, Director of Preparedness for the American Red Cross. All businesses should have a disaster plan, but for small businesses, being prepared can make a difference in being able to stay in business after a disaster.

The survey data is especially relevant considering that one in four businesses do not reopen after a major disaster such as a flood, tornado or earthquake, according to the Institute for Business and Home Safety, and considering that small businesses account for more than 99 percent of businesses in the United States alone.

Sodexi has developed a system for total electronic processing of air cargo shipments

In 2008, a new IT procedure will be introduced to replace the old paper based administration for exports. The system will be capable of running the entire transport process – from the original order through to delivery of goods.

The latest version of the Sodexi-designed system, entitled DELTA X, allows the full treatment of the process from handling, through automatic Customs clearance to final delivery.

Part of the Air France cargo network, Sodexi provides fast, efficient handling of express cargo at its computer-controlled airside facility at Paris CDG airport. Apart from traffic emanating from the Air France network, the company handles the Equation service for all Skyteam members, and handles many other airlines as well as FedEx, TNT, DHL, Chronopost and other specialist express forwarders.

European courier TNT eyes Subic logistics facility

European courier TNT NV is looking at the possibility of taking over the Subic Bay logistics facility that will be vacated by US-based Federal Express when it relocates its Asia-Pacific hub operations to Guangzhou, China next year.

Sources said the Dutch courier, in line with its expansion binge amid increased traffic in the region, could be eyeing the Subic facilities currently being used by FedEx for its Asia- Pacific regional hub operations.

Earlier, the country tried to lure another foreign courier to take over the facility, which is adjacent to the Subic Bay International Airport.

European courier DHL International GmBH has announced as early as last year that it was definitely not taking over FedEx’s facility in Subic.

US-based United Parcel Service of America Inc., on the other hand, has a hub in Clark, Pampanga.

FedEx invests to support Manchester economic growth

FedEx Express outlined its growth strategy for the Manchester region which involves the first direct flight from Manchester to the U.S., the creation of 40 new jobs, a new station and domestic express services through its recently purchased operating company, ANC Express.

Officially launching the new FedEx MD-11 wide-body express freighter which flies daily, Monday-Thursday, from Manchester direct to Memphis, Elliott also provided details of a range of FedEx investments aimed at further enhancing the region’s trading opportunities.

Additionally, U.K. domestic express transportation company, ANC Express, acquired by FedEx in December last year, is also helping FedEx customers access the new flight. ANC’s depots, spread throughout the region, will play an important role in picking up and delivering FedEx customers’ packages to Manchester Airport.

FedEx investments also include relocating to a new station in Trafford Park. At 27,000 sq ft., the new purpose-built facility is nearly twice the size of the old facility and is required to meet increased volumes and to support the new flight.

The new station, plus the new flight, means FedEx has almost doubled its workforce in Manchester to 84 while adding 13 new vans and 17 new courier routes to service businesses in and around Greater Manchester.
