OutBound shipping completes United States Postal Service manifest analysis and certificication

OutBound Shipping System, a provider of automated carrier certified shipping software and solutions has today announced that it has completed Manifest Analysis and Certification (MAC) through the United States Postal Service (USPS).

MAC certification was first launched in 2001 by USPS in partnership with the mailing industry to provide a rigorous examination of vendor-supplied manifest mailing software. Although voluntary, receiving MAC certification ensures that vendor-developed shipping systems offer the ability to be fully integrated with USPS and provide accurate postage calculations.

Currently, OutBound Shipping System’s multi-carrier certified shipping solution integrates United States Postal Service (USPS), Federal Express (FedEx) and United Parcel Service (UPS) products and services and also has a less than truckload (LTL) module. The latest edition will feature increased application functionality as well as full integration with USPS.

ABX adds flights in Asian market

ABX Air Inc. and cargo delivery competitors including FedEx Corp. and DHL are hustling to expand their services in fast-growing Pacific and Asian markets.

The companies are buying aircraft, or even competitors that already operate in Asia, to serve lucrative U.S.-Asia or intra-Asian routes. The focus is on freight hauled in containers aboard cargo aircraft, either with international or intra-continent range.

Wilmington-based ABX Air has begun a two-year agreement to support Asian cargo operations of All Nippon Airways Co. (ANA) of Japan. ABX has deployed two Boeing 767 freighters, and recently flew its first cargo flight for ANA from Osaka, Japan, to Dalian, China. ABX expects annual revenue of USD 22 million from its agreement to support All Nippon Airways.

ABX also said last week that it will spend USD 23 million to buy a Boeing 767-200 long-range aircraft from Air China Ltd. for international cargo service.

FedEx, the company that pioneered overnight delivery of small packages in the United States, has begun next-business-day delivery service available to customers throughout China. FedEx also spent USD 400 million to buy the DTW Group’s domestic express network in China and DTW’s 50 percent share of an express delivery joint venture with FedEx.

U.S. delivery companies also are competing for business in Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia.

In June, DHL said it bought a 49 percent interest in ASTAR Air Cargo, a Florida-based airline that operates out of DHL’s Wilmington hub and serves customers in the United States, Europe and the Middle East. DHL also invested in Polar Air Cargo Inc. of Purchase, N.Y., to improve express delivery service from the United States to Asia.

Fedex quits Frankfurt

U.S. integrator FedEx will cease their Frankfurt flight operations and move traffic to Cologne/Bonn airport instead.
The move will be taken in spring 2010 and include 60 weekly flights.

Reason for doing so is the night flight ban Frankfurt’s airport company Fraport AG wants to impose by 2011 when runway number four will be ready and go into service.

Closing of Rhein/Main from midnight till 5:00 am is strongly backed by the local Hesse politicians.

Governor Herr Koch promised the public to shut down continental Europe’s busiest airport during night times as compromise for building an additional runway that will trigger more traffic and thus assault the vicinity of Rhein/Main.

Now FedEx however pulled the emergency brake by quitting Frankfurt and moving to Cologne.

Fedex announced the building of a new sorting center for 140 million euros that will open up its gates by 2010 and be exclusively utilized by FedEx.

While Cologne/Bonn airport invests 70 million euros the U.S. package giant promised to pay the other half for equipping the facility with a state-of-the-art sorting systems. Garvens further pointed out that he intends to renew the license for night flights beyond 2015 when the current allowance for as many as 36 nightly operations expires.

Located at the southern end of the West Cargo Terminal Area, the new hub will be built on a parcel totaling 1 million square feet and will open next year. Rapid expansion is planned to a sorting capacity of 17,000 pieces per hour. The new hub will link all of China via Shanghai to UPS’s international network with direct service to the Americas, Europe and Asia.
