EU's McCreevy complains to France, Germany, 6 other states over postal services

EU internal market commissioner Charlie McCreevy has complained to France, Germany and six other member states over lack of competition in their postal services markets, his spokesman said.

The other countries are Austria, Belgium, Finland, the Netherlands, Poland and Slovakia, the spokesman said.

‘The commissioner sent a letter to all 27 member states on postal services,’ he said, adding that McCreevy singled out eight countries for criticism.

EU countries have to implement the European Commission’s liberalisation measures by Dec 31, 2010.

The spokesman confirmed that Dutch group TNT NV has filed a formal complaint with the commission against minimum wages in the German postal industry.

The commission is concerned about the minimum wages and a VAT exemption enjoyed by German mail incumbent Deutsche Post World Net AG.

The German government last autumn decided to make minimum wages paid at Deutsche Post mandatory for the whole industry.

TNT claims that the German government is violating EU regulations that ensure free and fair competition among EU members operating across borders.

Itella and Kauko Group have confirmed the acquisition of Kauko Group by Itella Corporation on Friday, March 14. Kauko Group is specialised in international freight. The acquisition was approved last week by Finnish Competition Authority.

Itella launch 'ParcelXchange' in Estonia

‘Hot on the Heels’ of the recent successful launch of the ParcelXchange in Helsinki, Finland; Itella, the leading Express and Parcels business has installed another modular system, this time in Tallinn, Estonia – developed and supplied by Business Direct’s Global Licensing division. The first of the Estonian network of ‘ParcelXchanges’ is sited in it’s capital Tallinn, in a busy hypermarket called RIMI based in Haabersti.
Typically, an automatic parcel terminal has 50-100 parcel lockers, the size of which can be altered according to demand and traffic profile. The customer receives an SMS on their personal cell/mobile phone” informing them of their parcel delivery, the location of the locker and the code with which the locker in the automated parcel terminal can be opened. The safety and usability of the terminal’s interface corresponds to that of an automatic teller machine and the terminals are usually located along consumers’ daily routes, for example in shopping centres and at traffic junctions.
Customers benefit from delivery security and consumer benefits from collection flexibility with the capability to collect parcels at their convenience, 24/7 if required. Alongside this, the technology provided in the modular format ParcelXchange provides Itella with the capability and flexibility to optimise and upscale the network simply by growing the size of the exchange with more columns, or larger lockers as the increase in demand for the service arises. Additional benefits include, greater consolidation of delivery costs, with of course zero delivery failures as the service is not dependent on a recipient/consumer being available at home to accept the parcel.

Itella first in Finland to test automated parcel terminal

Itella is the first in Finland to test an automated parcel terminal, which offers a new way for consumers to pick up their parcels. The three-month pilot project will be launched in cooperation with Hobby Hall on 3 March in Itäkeskus, Helsinki.

The automated parcel terminal increases the number of ways in which consumers can receive parcels. In the future, consumers can choose to pick up a parcel from the post office, from an automated parcel terminal or even have it delivered to their home.

Typically, an automatic parcel terminal has 50-100 parcel lockers, the size of which can be altered. The customers receive an SMS informing them of a parcel that has arrived and with which the locker in the automated parcel terminal can be opened. The safety and usability of the terminal’s interface corresponds to that of an automatic teller machine.

The pilot project is realised together with Hobby Hall, the distance selling market leader in Finland, and its customers. Those selected to participate in the pilot study will receive an SMS message, which they can use to pick up a free parcel from Hobby Hall at the Itäkeskus terminal.

As part of the pilot project, Itella will perform an extensive survey of the service needs of consumers and distance selling companies and create a terminal service concept that meets the actual Finnish market demands. “After the pilot project is over, we will introduce an automated parcel terminal operations model suitable for the Finnish markets and announce our future plans,” says Aku Happo.

The English company Business Direct is in charge of the technical realisation of the automated parcel terminal.

Itella Logistics to acquire Kauko Group

Itella Logistics has signed an agreement on the acquisition of Kauko Group specialized in providing international transport services.

Kauko Group will complement Itella Logistics’s service range outstandingly through its solid expertise in international road, air and sea freight, and will enable us to be even better equipped to implement global transport solutions, says Vesa Vertanen, Senior Vice President, Itella Logistics.

The sellers in this acquisition include Kaukohuolinta Invest Oy, part of the Juuranto Group company, Kauko Group’s operative management and Spedex Oy. – We are delighted that the buyer is Itella, a Finnish company which, as an international logistics operator, has good prospects for developing the company further, says Helena Juuranto-Perttunen, member of Kauko Groups’ Board of Directors.

Kauko Group has approximately 110 employees and, in addition to its head office located in Tuusula, offices in Turku, Tampere, Lahti, Tallinn, Riga, and a representative office in Moscow. In 2007, Kauko Group posted net sales of approximately EUR 56 million.

In connection with the acquisition, Kauko Group’s current Managing Director, Jarmo Halonen, has been appointed Country Manager of Itella Logistics Finland.

In connection with the acquisition, Itella Logistics has also entered into an agreement concerning the acquisition of Kauko Group´s Swedish affiliate company , Hansar Logistics AB, which will continue to operate as an independent company until further notice.
