La Poste delivers strong profit growth

The French post office, La Poste, is set to announce a 49 per cent rise in its net profits for 2005, to 557m euros, having been expecting just over 400m euros. An operating margin of 3.6 per cent is forecast (up from 2.8 per cent in 2004), broadly in line with the 3.5 per cent predicted in December. Chairman Paul Bailly should tell his board on Monday that turnover was up by 3.6 per cent to 19.35bn euros, with operating profits increasing by 35 per cent to more than 700m euros.

GLS accelerates European parcel shipment

General Logistics Systems (GLS) is reducing its regular delivery time for international parcels in Central Europe by one third. Parcel shipments that have to cross two borders now arrive at their destination one day earlier. Since April 1st, six countries are integrated into the “Euro 48” project. For Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Austria, the Czech Republic and the major part of France GLS is reducing the regular delivery time of its interna-tional basic parcel product from 72 to 48 hours. This affects shipments that cross two national borders. For neighbouring countries, a delivery time rang-ing from 24 to 48 hours is the rule at GLS.

La Poste reports substantial rise in profit for 2005

La Poste, the French national postal services group, has announced an increase of nearly 50 per cent in its net profit for 2005, to 557m euros, for a 3.5 per cent increase in turnover, to 19.3bn euros. This positive performance comes on the back of an improvement in the group’s operating margin, which increased from 1.7 per cent in 2003 to 3.9 per cent in 2005. The group is facing the challenge of the complete liberalisation of the postal services market in 2009. Some 65 per cent of its turnover is already generated on markets open to competition, and 15 per cent of it is generated abroad.
