Belgian La Poste/De Post earn EUR45.5m – Q1 2004

Belgian postal and diversified services group La Poste/De Post earned a consolidated net income of EUR45.5 mln (USD56.5 mln) for the first quarter of 2004, compared to EUR16.2 mln for the first quarter of 2003, the company said in a news release in June 2004. (Note: Unless otherwise stated all the results are for the first quarter of 2004, compared to the previous year’s similar period.) La Poste/De Post earnings before interest and tax totalled EUR539 mln (USD668.95 mln), a year-on-year increase of EUR26 mln (USD32.27 mln). The gross earnings of La Poste/De Post’s subsidiaries totalled EUR0.3 mln (USD0.37 mln).

EU state-aid rules may force some markets to open

In their new rules restricting state aid to troubled companies, European Union regulators could require governments to open protected markets in exchange for approving some corporate bailouts. The EU announced new guidelines yesterday aimed at forcing companies to pay back state aid. But the initiative doesn’t stop at demanding cash or the selloff of assets in return. It also gives governments the alternative of fostering more competition as a way to gain EU approval for aid to companies in distress. But experts say the rules could magnify differences within Europe over the pace at which governments permit competition in protected sectors. France and Germany, which have been outspoken about protecting their industrial giants, already accuse the European Commission of jeopardizing jobs and stability by moving too quickly to liberalize markets.

Seur to double overseas business within a year after La Poste tie-up

The recent tie-up between Seur and France’s La Poste has set up the Spanish delivery services group for strong international growth over the next five years.

According to Ramón Mayo, the vice president of Seur España, the alliance with La Poste will see the contribution of the Spanish group’s international operations to total turnover double within a year to 14 percent from 7 percent.
