French La Poste unveils broadband Internet terminals

La Poste has presented its ‘cyberkiosque’ broadband Internet terminal for local communities, which allows residents to access online public services free of charges. Some of the terminals have video conferencing capabilities. La Poste will handle installation, maintenance and personalisation of planned content. The cyberkiosque, its services and satellite connection cost Euro20k-Euro25k. The terminals also have an antenna and WiFi wireless Internet access capability over a distance of 150 mt.

Transport logistics operators call on EU to stamp out unfair state subsidies

Associations representing privately-held transport and logistic operators said they called on the European Commission this morning to stamp out unfair subsidies to their publicly-owned counterparts and to put an end to the misuse of those subsidies. In particular, the associations are concerned about state subsidies to Deutsche Post AG’s unit DHL, Belgium’s SNCB’s ABX Logistics, La Poste’s GeoPost and SNCF’s road haulage unit Sernam. Two associations – Germany’s Wettbewerbsverein and France’s HALTE – said they asked the commission to beef up regulations and implementation and to take a proactive role towards state aid, putting an end to ‘unjustifiable competitive advantages’ enjoyed by the public companies. The commission is already examining two cases in this area.

La Poste Creates Property Subsidiary

La Poste, the French postal service, has created a new subsidiary, Immo Poste, which will deal with the housing stock used by the company to conduct its business. The company says that the creation of the new subsidiary will allow responsibilities to be clarified, as well as costs relating to property.

DHL Solutions expands RFID service to help customers across Europe

European customers of DHL Solutions’ logistics service now can call on the company to handle their radio-frequency identification tagging requirements. DHL this month expanded to companies across Europe its TagFIT RFID service, which it had been offering only to Metro AG’s top 100 suppliers to help them meet the retailer’s RFID-compliance mandate. Once there’s agreement on global RFID standards, DHL hopes to roll out the service to North America and China, too. “Our goal is to become the core logistics supplier for RFID services worldwide,” says Clemens Beckmann, managing director of corporate development at Deutsche Post World Net, DHL Solutions’ parent company.

French government to penalise post office for losses and delays

The French government has launched a public consultation on its proposal to hold the French post office (La Poste) responsible for loss or delivery delays of items in its care. The initiative is contained in the French postal services regulation bill, which has been drawn up with a view to enabling La Poste to provide banking services and compete in a deregulated postal market.
