French Postal Service to become ISP

La Poste, the French post office and the second largest postal service company in Europe, is to launch its broadband internet products March 17.

At the European level, La Poste is fairly late to the game, as many European postal services already offer broadband internet access in particular, Deutsche Post, with its T-ISDN xxl product range long since having been introduced to the German market.

France's La Poste to raise basic stamp prices for the first time since 1996

France’s La Poste plans to raise basic stamp prices for the first time since 1996, with the price of a standard French and European letter stamp rising to 0.50 eur from 0.46 eur from June 1, 2003, a Poste spokesman said. Chairman Jean-Paul Bailly requested government permission for the tariff increases in order to avoid a potential deficit of 315 mln eur in 2003, if the basic stamp price was kept at 0.46 eur.

French postage stamp price could rise to 0.50 euros

The French post office, La Poste, is to present its business plan for 2003 today. The government has still not decided whether to increase the price of stamps, however. If the price is increased from 0.46 euros to 0.50 euros, the group’s accounts will reach break-even point.

If the price is increased to 0.52 euros, moreover, the accounts will show a slight profit. If the price remains the same, La Poste’s results will include a loss of 350m euros.

Cofinoga and French Postal Services Group La Poste in ATM deal

Customers of French consumer credit company Cofinoga can now use the ATMs of French postal services group La Poste for cash withdrawals, following an agreement announced last month. With 4,025 ATMs, La Poste has the third largest network in France after Credit Agricole and Groupe Caisse d’Epargne.

Cofinoga, owned by French department store Galeries Lafayette and BNP’s consumer finance subsidiary Cetelem, is the third largest private label issuer in France with 9.0 million cards and loans of (euro) 7.8 billion at the end of 2001.
