The French post office (La Poste) is believed to have asked the
French finance ministry for permission to extend its range of
financial services to damage insurance and consumer credit. The
ministry is said to be in favour of the insurance proposal, but
opposed to the idea of La Poste’s distributing consumer credit.
Negotiations are underway between the French State and La Poste to
renew its contract, which runs out this year. With 60,000 employees
from a total of 300,000, financial services ensure activities, and
sometimes the raison d’etre, for a third of the 17,000 post offices
