Chronopost launches new next-day express service and eBay partnership

Chronopost has launched a new express shipping solution “Prêt-à-Expédier” (“Ready to ship”) and improved the shipping service of express parcels on eBay France to better respond to customer needs.

The new shipping solution “Prêt-à-Expédier”, offered in post offices, provides next-day delivery before 13:00 within France, including packaging and transportation. It will be extended to international destinations by end-2008.

Chronopost said the new service targets small- and medium-sized enterprises. A survey last November found that 63 pct of SMEs used next morning express delivery services. In future, its “Chrono 18”, with delivery by the end of the next working day, will be reserved for contract customers.

The new “Prêt-à-Expédier” product range offers five packaging sizes (for weights up to 500g, 1kg, 2kg, 3kg and 6kg) and includes insurance, track-and-trace and POD. The minimum price is EUR 17.56.

Meanwhile, Chronopost has signed a partnership with eBay in France to enable customers to buy and to prepay online their express shipments saving time and ensuring traceability. Customers also receive a 7 pct discount off the delivery price.

EBay users can select transportation by Chronopost and are redirected to the express company’s website. There they can enter their shipment details and print off an airway bill to affix to the shipment. This can then be taken to a post office, Chronopost agency or Chrono Relais service points for pick-up and delivery.

GLS inaugurated a new hub in France

GLS opened its EUR 4,5 million parcels distribution hub at Roquemaure, near Avignon, South-East France, to finalise its transport plan for southern France. With the new hub, the company expects to optimize its service quality to better cope with the rising parcel volumes in the region.

Built on a surface of 30,000 sqm, the new 4,000 sqm facility is equipped with the latest technology and has the capacity to sort 45,000 parcels a day. The site has 100 quays, 40 for HGVs and 60 for smaller vehicles. It will serve as a hub and as an agency at the same time thanks to a special delivery zone differentiating the two parties and assuring the safety of the parcels.

The new Roquemaure hub will employ 70 local workers. Following the opening of GLS’s hub in Uzerche in January 2007, this is the final part of the EUR 100 million that GLS invested in Europe during 2006-2007 to further expand its network.

TNT France to launch ecological IT solutions and new delivery service

TNT Express France has launched a new operational system for its IT network adapting more ecological and cost-saving methods in order to limit the environmental impact of its IT activities. In addition, the company has launched a new delivery service “12:00 Express” for shipments within France to be delivered next day before noon.

The current IT model applied at TNT operates in a traditional way with two systems, the “active” one in use and the “inactive” one in a sleeping modus that can be set in if the first system breaks down.

The new optimized system is equipped with two smaller systems that are both active. Thanks to the high quality of the equipment provided nowadays by the suppliers, this solution makes it possible to offer the same service in terms of the quality and reliability at a more favourable price.

Another advantage of the new system is the considerable reduction of the environmental impact in every stage of the projects including production, transportation, installation, energy consumption, maintenance and recycling of additional and inactive equipment.

This project is part of the TNT environmental programme “Planet Me” launched worldwide in 2007.

Meanwhile, TNT France has launched a new delivery service “12:00 Express” for shipments to be delivered nationwide next day before noon.

This service will go into operation in the beginning of April this year for all the shipments between 0 and 30 kg.

TNT assures a complete coverage of the market with 86 pct of the French companies using the delivery service before noon.

Opening of EU mail markets to raise competitive pressure on postal companies -S&P

Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services said the opening of the EU’s 90 bln eur mail markets to full competition from 2011 will raise the competitive pressure on the four large European postal companies, Deutsche Post AG, rated ‘A-‘ with a negative outlook, TNT NV, rated ‘BBB+’, La Poste, rated ‘AA-‘ and Italy’s Poste Italiane Group, rated ‘A’, with stable outlooks.
S&P said the slow pace of liberalisation over a 15-year period has also offered a strong competitive advantage to these incumbent national mail services. This has given the companies the chance to reposition themselves in more lucrative segments of the mail market and expand into non-mail activities like international express and logistics and financial services.
Deutsche Post and TNT are likely to be key players in sector consolidation, and their ratings will continue to benefit from their strongly cash-generative mail segments, the agency added.
S&P said state-owned La Poste will also benefit from the slow pace of full liberalisation of its home market, which gives it more time to streamline and modernize its mail operations, leverage its costly network with its enlarged banking offer, and eventually match competitors’ efficiency and profitability.
While, Poste Italiane, although also not privatised, may be in a stronger position because its financial services contribute a strong 67 pct of its total sales, compared with 22 pct for La Poste, the agency said.
All four players may also face regulation risks because the European Commission liberalisation plan still upholds the controversial ‘universal service obligation on incumbent national postal services, obliging them to continue to provide full territorial collection and delivery at least five days a week at an affordable cost, S&P added.
